I'm new to deer farming and this year was first time doin Ai. We bred my does on November 15. Christmas morning I watched my buck mount one of the does we Ai. My question is that it has been exactly 40 days since we Ai. Does the timing on the cycle of this doe seem odd?? I thought they should cycle around 28 days

If a doe did not take to the AI it could be for many reasons. Including she was never in heat even though you put her through the AI process. Nothing says that a 28 day clock starts from when you think it should at AI time. Secondly she may have took to the AI and miscarried. And then came back around again in what would again to you seem like an inaccurate cycle. Try not to over think what is going on. It seriously is not worth the effort. Just wait until spring and see what you have.

I'm not that worried about it she was Ai to a good buck and my buck up is a good buck I was just curious about the timing. I never thought about a miscarriage

I'll throw in another idea.  I have seen does get bred to the back up buck but the does still conceived on the days of A.I.  My thoughts are a very aggressive buck will have his way with a doe so seeing a buck breed a does in some cases means nothing other than the buck was very horny.  Whitetail are very aggressive animals in the rut and that includes **** of the doe.

Good point Jack, I hadn't thought about that. I have seen that personally happen on a farm before!
