Another deer lesson learned

We did our LAP AI this last week.  Everything went well till the last day.  It was in the forties the first five days but the last day a storm came in.  My whitetail were last and I thought I could get away with A.I even thought it was very cold as I have done them at 15 for lows.  I'm afraid I knew better but tried it anyway.

So here was the problem as I see it now.

1)  Temp was 8 degrees and snow.

2)  Animals came into the A.I. room with snow on them.

3)  Animals came out wet but reversed right away and walked away.

4)  Animals had been off food and water for 24 hours so didn't have calories to keep them warm even though they were well fed in the pen when they got there.

5)  Temps went down to 8 below that night.  Got to love Montana weather.  Now it's back to 40.

Problem was three does couldn't keep up with the cold and did die from cold.

Lesson for me is cancel A.I. if weather is going that bad.  Not only did I lose does that were from New Image I lost the Payday semen I put in them.  This was a pricey lesson for someone who has been in the industry as long as I have.

I put this out there so other people can learn from my mistake.  I like my girls way better than this and failed them.

Sorry about your loss Jack, but I commend you for being man enough to share your story. Who knows how many deer you just saved by passing on your experience. Thank you.

Sorry Jack

That still sounds odd. Whitetails are very hardy. Could they have aspirated? They will eat a lot of snow. I don't think you stopped their fluid intake. If they had water, I don't think they wouldn't have been cold enough to die just from not eating for 48hours.

Only one aspirated and she is ok we gave extra pen but time will tell on her.  All the signs indicate cold as cause of death.  We were able to warm one up in the barn house and she is fine.  I really think the snow melting when in the AI room had a lot to do with the heat loss.

Yes that is why I put this up so people would think about sedation and effects it has on blood vessels constriction and body function.

dtala,

We did about 115 animals with a X/T mix.  We put all animals on oxygen while recovering.  We have done about 350 animals over the last three years with no problem.
