In west texas we have been struggling with severe drought and high temperatures. this has made it difficult for our new fawns. We currently have four fawns that are being bottle raised that are not doing well.

Fawn #1 female 1 week old pulled at 24hrs smallest triplet-nursed normally first 24 hrs. day 3 developed chest congestion stopped nursing temp spiked at 104. used SQ fluids daily for three days. Medicated with antibiotic SQ every 24 hours on days 3, 4, 5 gave fawn paste daily for extra nutrition and force fed 9-12 oz goat kid milk w colostrum over 4 feedings after temp normalized. she has developed "stupids" and is not stable on front feet. We started her on Thiamine and B vitamin complex two days ago (Day 2 of penicillin). Will be third day after thiamine and b tomorrow. she has regained some control of neck muscles but still cannot stand and will not suck on nipple just chews on it so am still force feeding her.

Fawn#2 buck- 3days old pulled from pen yesterday running high temp(104) NO ENERGY deep respiration. started on penicillin and rehydrated. does not have energy to lift head. sleeps like death was chilled this am but gave fluids yesterday and today and warmed with towels before force feeding formula today to get 10 ozs in him. Giving thiamine and b complex in addition to penicillin this time.

Fawn #3 doe fawn 5days old similar symptoms to fawn #2 although not as lethargic but is unwilling to stand - rehydrating with SQ fluids, penicillin, thiamine and b complex vit sq as well.

other than being dehydrated and fever with some difficulty breathing, congestion? these were all healthy good size fawns

Fawn # 4 was the smallest buck of set of quads. Has been healthy for three days before coming down with same set of symptoms. He has not run fever but has fought with sub normal temp. He has been bottle raised -taken at about 6 hours. are starting him on same protocol. Was 2-3 pounds at birth. All four fawns have urinated and deficated normally with Exception of fawn 1 who developed diarrhea this morning. at which time we started her on Albion.

They are all hanging on but how long should the remaining symptoms persist. Is there anything we are missing? Could this be a type of heat stress.

Please help.... Lots of experience with domestic animals but only minor experience with fawns.

all fawns have improved with meds. The lethargy is esp worrisome

This is a little late but I just got done reading about your sick fawns, I'm sure they are either doing good by now or they are dead, but thought I would give you a heads up for the future. I give my fawns a product that I have had very good success with, as soon as they are born to avoid future problems, and then I keep them on it every day of there life and I have very little problems. You can also use during health challenges, and also helps for heat stress. If you have any questions you can give me a call and I would be glad to help you out. 574-209-2226

B101490, what is the product that you are referring to in the post above? Is it a secret?

No, this product is no secret, the brand name is Fastack, for newborn fawns I use Jumpstart Gel, when bottlefeeding I use Liquid Dispersable once a day, any time when handling, I use Ruminant Gel,(such as moving, trucking, treating in chute etc. whenever under stress, I think you get the idea.) and everyday in feed I use what is called Microbial Pack. Any more questions let me know And I will try to answer or you can call, either way works for me.
