Four and half week old buck fawn develops fever between 102.2 to 102.7 F about every 3 to 4 days. He acts like his stomach hurts and hunches up. No diarrhea. We started with Baytril for 2 days he bounced back and did very well for 3 to 4 days. He is on red cap milk and doing well. After this time frame he developed fever again gave Baytril and within 4 hours he was once again fine. Our vet started him on Excenel for 5 days and was doing fine until the 4th morning and fever came back. Give the 4th shot of Excenel and within four hours doing well again. The vet will be taking a blood sample today. Any suggestions as to this fawn's problem.

How much are you feeding him and how many times a day? Have you been giving him probiotics.....or atleast good dirt for him to eat? Have you started him on regular feed yet and if so what?

We had one a couple years ago that we treated with draxxin, mostly because I had it on hand and didn't know what else to do with him. Eventually the fevers went away. I suspect it was a urinary tract infection or some minor internal birth defect that he outgrew. If the fever clears up with the treatment you are giving him, I would keep doing it. Hopefully it is something he will outgrow. If the fever doesn't clear up as soon as normal sometime, I would quickly switch to something else.

Pete,

I have a fawn right now that seems to act the same way yours is. Mine had gotten stuck in the birth canal and I had to finish pulling her out. About every three to four days she seems sluggish and fevered. A 2cc shot of PEN -G and she is good for another few days.

Keep me posted on your progress, I am curious as to what you may find out.

To update you on his condition. The fawn develop another fever today and our vet seen him. His fever was 104 F and she gave him pencillin and took blood sample. The fawn has gotten worse and gave him a dose of Excenel so far not much luck. We also gave him a dose of Banamine about 4 hours later waiting to see how this works. Also gave 50 cc of NS SQ. He was a very small fawn when he was removed from our pen and had lots of problems with nursing the first week. We did give him fresh soil and this did help. Tried Target Probiotics but it really upset his stomach and so I stopped. Unfortunately he has never taken to eating grain very well. He has been nursing about 250 ml of milk every 5 hours and doing well. This will be a long night hope to have better news in the morning.

Bad news lost the fawn last night. If anyone is interested let me know and I will post the results from the blood sample.

Sorry for your loss Pete. I'm sure he was a good one, they normally are. One thing we have done for fevers in the past is give them liquid childrens pain/fever medicine.

We received news from our Vet on Saturday regarding the blood sample and it was E. Coli. I hope this information helps others with similar problems. This website is an excellent source of information!!!!

Pete

Im sorry to here about the loss of the fawn. I was wondering if you used anything at birth for e-coli prevention.

Pete,

I am sorry for your loss.

I am confused a little though. If the fawn had e-coli he should have had the runs. But you said he didn't have the runs. Usually the two go together. I have had good success of treating fawns with SULMET. It is an over the counter treatment for bacterial problems in cattle. It has worked well for my fawns. It is a treatment for e-coli. I never suggested this to you because of the lack of scours in your description. Sulmet can be found normally at feed stores, southern states and tractor supply.
