When we purchased our first deer the Amish deerfarmer gave us a lesson in as he called it "Basic Deer Mathmatics" just thought I would pass it on to anyone not familiar with how it works by buying 1 bred doe -vs- getting on a list for a 2012 doe fawn and with a 50/50 buck to doe ratio & no more purchases!

2011 you begin deerfarming

2011 1 bred doe purchased -vs- putting your name in for an 2012 unborn fawn

2012 1 doe & 2 fawns -vs- 1 doe fawn

2013 1 doe & 1 yrl doe & 1 yrl buck & 2 fawns - vs- 1 yrl doe

2014 2 does & 4 fawns -vs- 1 yrl doe & 2 fawns

1 yrl doe & 1 yrl buck

1 - 2 yr old buck

2015 3 does & 6 fawns -vs- 1 doe & 2 fawns

2 yrl does & 2 yrl bucks 1 yrl doe & 1 yrl buck

1- 2 yr old buck

1-3 yr old buck

2016 5 does & 10 fawns -vs- 2 does & 4 fawns

3 yrl does & 3 yrl bucks 1 yrl buck & 1 yrl doe

2 - 2 yr old bucks 1 2 yr old buck

1 - 3 yr old buck

1 - 4 yr old buck

25 head of deer to feed -vs- 9 head of deer to feed

So next time your wondering just how we got ALL these deer to feed you can now do BASIC DEER MATHMATICS!!!!!!!:D

Great info. I’m pretty good at math, but I had to do that one a few times.

Wanting to get into the business, it looks as if most people are selling their buck at about 3 years of age. So using “basic deer math” when could one start seeing a return?

thank you

Virgil......if it has mathematics involved......you know it is way over your head....stay out of the conversation!!

OK Duffy stupid is stupid does. Lets go stand under skid loader bucket and count how many seconds it takes to smash us.

Ok guess we are going with last names....being yours is polish Virgil not sure I would go that route....Lapinski ........any how.....you are right did a stupid thing...but by the grace of God I'm still here...thank you so much for letting me be able to witness again.....not sure the big guy would have done the same thing for you.......

Dustin, normal was the days before deer farming.HA Ha!!!

Hey Dennis Doofey, or Duffy or what ever it is my name is spelled Lipinski get it right. At least now you have an excuse for being so slow.

well it sounds like you guys have had some great times together.

but back to basic math, if your not selling your buck until 3 years of age, is someone that is looking at getting into the business not looking at making thier first dime until year 3?

Yes 3 years is about the time you should see some return. If you have some does or fawns to sell you might get a little back on those...If the genitics are what others would want.

Ks166 yes 3 years is a good book mark but 5 years is more realistic if you ask me......unless you have a lot of cabbage to start with you need to take losing some animals into the picture....that is always a factor.......so make sure you include that into your figures it has big effect on your returns.....

Virgil ......lipinski....Lapinski.......potato ......potatoe........tomato.....tomatoe........your still polish and there is nothing you can do about it sorry!.......your deer look like goats.......you try so hard to aspire to be like me....but it will and can not ever happen.....move on my friend.....IT IS WHAT IT IS....EXCEPT IT AND MOVE ON!

Hey Dennis quit picking on us Pollocks it`s not politically correct !!! LOL Can you speak Polish Dennis ? LOL

Hey Mitch....your right.....just for the record though........Virgil is the only ******* I pick on......all the others are ok.........Lol!!:D

If you buy a open doe you are looking at five years before your bucks are three. If you by a bred doe you are looking at four years until your bucks are three. If you buy buck fawns then you will have three year olds to sell at three. It is hard to buy buck fawns, feed, and care for them for three years and turn a profit. Unless you can get them cheap and they all survive then you may make a little.

To make things simple it takes a long time to just break evan before you can show a profit. Lots of expences to get started. Then when you get were you want to be things always change from what they were five years ago.

I have been raising deer for four years this spring and have spent between 75 and 100 grand. I am in it to raise stocker bucks not breeders. I have only gained back about 10% of what ive spent on it. Alot of this is due to not having very many buck fawns each year. I think it will be the 5th or 6th year when my farm will start breaking even.

On the initial investment i look at it like this. I would have waisted it something else.

So why do I raise deer?

I love almost everything about it.

One thing is for sure it helps to have a wife that supports you on this and is very understanding.

You will also need a good job to support your deer habit.
