Wanted to get some opinions on a topic of whether to breed or not to breed with some of the big yearlings out there today. I did a search on this and only found some recent stuff on whether to breed yearling or doe fawns. First of all we have never bred with a big yearling, we just arent a big enough operation to be able to take that risk, and for the most part we have always seen this as a risk(in our opinions). But as we are growing and the opportunity arises, we are thinking about AI'ing a big yearling we were fortunate or lucky enough to get a straw out of. The buck I am refering to is "All Jacked Up, est. 300" @ 1 :D." Moving forward with our breeding program, I just cant see how breeding with such a big yearling can hurt us. Now, I am referring to breeding just a few doe, not the whole herd or a bunch of them. With some of the huge yearlings out there, and the pedigrees behind them, I just cant see a down side to this. I see big and quick antler production, and good pedigrees. And God willing, maybe we get lucky and find something special. And if not what are we left with, a fawn that will produce great growth at a young age, or a doe that may possibly pass that on as well. This is just our opinions, and as you can see our opinion has changed from what it was before.

Any thoughts on some of the big yearlings out there, and is anyone else breeding with some of them? Opinions on whether you believe it is worth the shot?

Thanks for reading

Damien
