Just noticed today we have a BT case. Yearling buck, medium swelling, ears drooping, slobbering, and lethargic.

I have seen this MANY times so its no big deal, he has been treated.

Just letting you guys know ITS HERE.

P.S. He was also vaccinated for EHD/BT.

From what i seen Jay, Spraying&praying, seems to be your best bet, less you durn lucky! leaves me out. tell carl, take it easy, but dont let up! Dc

He didn;t have the misters up yet, looked like it rained in the buck pen.

Reed- Bluetongue struck with a vengence in Louisiana starting around the first week in June. Many farmers lost deer and some farmers were devastated. We have had our share of losses but feel fortunate compared to others. We researched and found out that the midge fly has developed some resistance to premethrin. We now use deltamethrin for spraying since there is no evidence of midge fly resistance to deltamethrin. We have not loss a deer since spraying with deltamethrin. Also, worm your deer now.... and segregate any infected animals. We are now vaccinating every 60 days with the vaccine.

Thanks pdaddy, I sure my dad will read this before I can tell him and check on it.

pdaddy,

You may check into the result of hyper-vaccinating you deer. Our state vet told us that if you vaccinate your deer more than recomended that their immune system may eventually not recognize the antigen/sickness as foreign and will not attack it. He likened it to the same principle as someone taking allergy injections.

David recently purchased a fogger. It is awesome in that when he sprays it actually floats accross the pen AND the deer. If anyone is interested I can get the model and make.

I am so sorry for your losses. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know.

Yes, that may be the case, as with all vaccines there are peaks and troughs in the immune system. We have found that we were losing deer that had not been vaccinated in 6 months, Deer that had been vaccinated within 6 months seem to fair better than those outside this time frame. We had to weigh the risk of over- vaccination versus "digging another hole". Thanks for your response.

I understand what and why you did what you did. Desperate times call for desperate measures. I only wanted you and anyone else that may or may not have know that vaccinating every 60 days was not a good practice.

ALSO,

It would be interesting to know if a signiificant number of the animals that have been vaccinated and died were given their two initial shots(2-4 weeks apart) befor 3-6 monts of age. The reason I question this is because I have noticed on more than one occasion that the age of the dying deer was a yearling. If I am not mistaken a fawns immune system is not fully developed until around 6 months of age. Something that may need to be taken into concideration. Also, as pdaddy suspects, if the vaccine is suspected to only lasts 6 months then the manufactures may need to look into it further and see if there needs to be a modification in the time frame for injections.

This is just me thinking out-loud and there may not be any truth behind any of it but you have to as questions and explore the possibilities to improve anything. The EHD/Blue T. vaccine is a start and I know we all want to see it work to the best of its ability.
