One of our three year old bucks broke his jaw. What do you think, put him down, or see if he heals????

Wow nate sorry to see this happen to you guys or any deer for that matter.I think if it was mine he would be put down in the morning.I know whitetails are capable of some amazing things but i dont see how he could heal in time before he starved to death.Hope someone gives you good solid advice on this but man it looks bad!!!
Thank you Mike.... Yes that is what we think also.... It does really look terrible! I just can't see any way that he is going to be able to eat.....
I was going to say sell him to a preserve ASAP but I would hate to see him suffer any longer. I'm with Four Seasons. Put him down.

Yeah we have him sold to a perserve already but they don't want him until the end of October. That is our thoughts also we really hate to see him suffer. Not sure at all how it happened..... He is in a pen by himself..... He is very calm.... When we got home from work today this is how we found him.....I guess I already knew the answer but was just hoping for some kind of miracle treatment....
Sorry, but this cannot be fixed without major re-constructive surgery that will be risky and very expensive.

You can also consult [email protected], a deer vet from TX... he is open to consultation... a kind soul. Can you give him a shot of pain killer and banamine and see what happens over the course of the week? Deer are pretty darned remarkable in their healing ability.

Nate: In the deer business you will always come up with something you don't want to do, but for the sake of his health you should put him down He will not be able to chew and will starve to death.I lost a double drop buck who broke his jaw fighting thru the fence with a wild buck.I didn't know till the following spring when I found a six point drop outside his pen.I think your vet would have the same opinion. Wow... I hope you didn't put him down. I have seen a lot worse heal quickly. Deer heal amazingly fast. Surely you have a vet close by that y'all can sedate this guy and exmine him and possibly do an external fixation procedure. They do great depending on extent of fracture but they can heal in 4 weeks. Once jaw is stabilized they can function as normal. Have your vet call me. Avg cost of procedure is about $750 depending.
