Buck facility prospect

Hi everyone,

I am posting a question that I have touched on just a little in the past, but was only somewhat interested in the idea due to a lack of money and land.

Myself and a buddy of mine are interested in trying to start a small deer breeding facility. We are not looking to have a large herd, nor do we have the land to have hunts on. My buddy is a hay farmer and most of his land is in alfalfa.

He is interested in putting aside a small amount of acreage to have facility where we can have a few bucks to freeze semen on and ship to doe owners for AI, and just a few does to breed for replacement bucks. We are looking at the potential of either white tailed or mule deer most likely, due to state regulation on what we can have here (sadly I think exotics are not allowed).

I want to do some research and see just how feasible this is to do. Would anyone be interested in buying the semen from well pedigreed bucks? I have heard that the market is down right now for deer farms, just as it is for every industry currently. However I think and HOPE that the US economy will soon bounce back.

Also, we are located in southern New Mexico near the boarder of El Paso Texas. There have been cases of CWD here in NM, however less cases than in many other parts of the US. Where my buddy's land is, there has not been any deer traffic for 30 plus years due to housing growth. All the deer that were in this area have long since moved into the surrounding mountains. That said there would be no contact with outside/wild deer, and any deer we bought would be from CWD free herds and would be tested regularly per state requirements. All this in mind would doe owners be afraid to buy semen from us do to the cases of CWD found in NM?

If I had the money and land I would start a small deer operation rather I thought it would bring profit or not simply because it is something I have always wanted to do, but I want to have some input on how realistic this is since I would be going into this with someone that would like to see a profit, and at the very least not loos money on.

Any ideas and input is greatly appreciated.

Dustin you will get all kinds of answers on that one. I myself at this time would say if you are worried about makin a profit i say dont do it. First it will take lots of startup money and lots of time to just get your startup investment back. You are down in an area that has lots of big deer farms with lots of big deer so competition will be an issue.Second you are near or in a closed boarders area?????? I am not sure of the semen you would be able to sell.I have heard different people say different things about using bucks from the south in northern deer. There are some good bucks up here with texas genes in them but i have heard many say that those big typicals just dont give enough extras that people like to see in a bucks rack.I myself love the texas deer with the huge big 200 plus inches of what a whitetail should look like and thats just what i am breeding for.I might lose some money on shooter sales but i will have a whitetail deer not an animal with...well i will just let that statement rest.. If its something you want to do i say go for it.There is nothing these days that you can get into and make an instant profit so it will take some time and mabey never but remember you only live once..Good luck either way and i will look forward to seein some huge normal looking deer coming from your part of the world!!!!

Four Seasons Whitetails - You are very correct when you say you only live once so go for it and do what you want to do. If I owned the land myself I would start an operation without even researching it because it is something I have always wanted to do. Being though that I would have to go into the business with someone else I have to have an idea that he will at least not loose money in the long run.

The work I am not worried about. I have put a lot of work into my horse operation and have not regretted it at all. The biggest start up cost would be in fencing and the purchase of the deer. My friend owns the land we would use and would fence it in while I purchased the deer. Feed would not be a problem as that is what my friend farms.

I too prefer the Big Typicals. Though I realize the abnormalities bring more money, I myself don't care for them. What are the thoughts on having Mule Deer? From what I have read the largest market is in White tails, and exotics, but is there a mule deer market? The Fish and game guy here seems to think that is the way to go. He said there are not as many Mule Deer farms out there, but that said it make Mule Deer semen sales higher priced as there is not as much available. Any thoughts there?

Dearjohn - Thank you for the link. I have actually watched this site some off and on, and it gives me a good idea what semen is going for, but not a good idea what kind of quantities are being sold. Any incite into that? Also, on the Mule Deer question, are there any sites out there dedicated to sales of mule deer and their semen? I have searched on google.com and have not had any luck finding much on mule deer.

Thank you both for your input

Unless there is some preserves in New Mexico that you can sell you shooters to, it would seem like you are a long way from any hunting ranches. As for profit in semen sales, it would take a pyle of money to even come close to having a deer with a good enough pedigree to make it worth doing not to mention in this day and age to market any big deer costs alot of money and it helps to have a name that's been marketing for years. The semen sales market is pretty much a bust unless you have about the top 1-3 deer of the year and even then its no run away. Way too many good deer out there now and that's why so many people are complaining about not being able to move them for what they have into them. Not to be rude but unless you have a hunting ranch close by that would be interested in buying your deer down there, I wouldn't do it. Like dear john posted, check out the whitetail exchange and you can see the semen prices for yourself. Hopefully we can get Obama out of office and the country will start to straighten out but I'm afraid it's going to take a long time at best. If it is legal and you can raise Mule deer it may be a nich if have a hunting ranch that would buy them, not many people raise mule deer and good fast maturing gentics are hard to come by but you may have some more of a demand in that area.

As for how much semen is moving, just watch the exchange for a month and the listings with zero bids will tell you just how much is NOT moving. Mule deer would be a better option for your area I would think. As for the feed, your not going to be able to just feed them alfalfa or hay, your going to also have to feed a pellet or textured feed that may be really expensive to ship that far unless you have alot of other breeders from TX that are close by. Either way with commodity prices as high as they are now, feed is really going to get expensive I'm afraid, worse then it already is. Either way you will HAVE to research it alot, DO NOT JUST GO BUY THE FIRST DEER YOU SEE THAT ARE FOR SALE UNLESS YOU LIKE EATING VENISON!! Good luck on whatever you decide to do, it really is enjoyable, just not that profitable.

If you are going to go with whitetail, I would suggest huge typicals. Semen out of typicals in the 200-230 range will still sell. At least that seems to be where some of the market is moving. Also the competion for pedigree and total size is alot competive. Just my two cents.

Muleys would be a good niche market as well.

Good luck to us all!

being in NM I would go with Muleys

Yea, that is what I am hearing from multiple people, which is fine with me. I am a big fan of Muleys.

Thanks
