Buck still has not shed!

Hello everyone,



Today is April 21st and we have a 3 year old that still has not shed his horns. He is not cut, and is very healthy. All our other bucks have shed and are growing out nicely. Any cause for concern or is this natural?

We have a yearling the same way. I was hoping he would have shed by now. as with you, our other bucks are puttin it on, would like to here opinions on this.

I think that is just the way it is, some buck's shed late. I know this year a few of our wild deer still have antlers. I found some from small buck's in late Feb. but started finding fresh shed's again in the wild a week ago, also seen one last week with 6 inches of new growth so who know's.

Big 8, I don't think the late shedding is anything to be concerned with. It is an individual thing among the bucks as to when they lose their racks, and you will find those that lose them early will continue to lose them early, same to be said for those losing them late. A variable that will affect a certain individual's timing is his health and nutrition level. You will find that your buck will lose his antlers the same time every year, sometimes within days of the year before, unless like I said his health or nutrition is down.

I had a buck that waited until late May last year before he started. He actually started growing his hew antlers out from under the bases of the old ones. This year, however, he shed sometime back in February and he's gone back to his typical frame.

Thanks for the reply. He is still hanging on to of his rack as of tonight. We have other bucks growing out, fawns on the ground, and him still with his rack on. Did the new antlers finally push them off or did you have to help? Also, what type of rack did he end up with last year when his new antlers pushed up around his old ones?

He finally let them go himself. I have some pictures on the computer at work that I will post tomorrow if I get a chance. You can search for Bonehead on the forums, but some of the pictures are mysteriously missing. I've notified Russell but I don't know if he ever got a chance to look into it. There are other pictures from past posts that don't show up. Anyone else have this problem?

I still have three bucks that haven't dropped. One is pushing new growth around last years antlers.
