i have noticed now twice in my buck pen what seems to be vomit. does anyone know what could cause this? i noticed it once last week and then again today. the first time i didnt think much of it, but this time im starting to be concerned. i have no idea as to what would cause them to vomit. could it just be one of them eating too much hay too fast?

I noticed that nobody responded yet... so I thought I would throw an idea at you. I have never seen the problem you mentioned (are you sure it's vomit?), but I know from previous experience that there is a toxin that can be in feed called (appropriately enough) vomitoxin. It is caused by a certain type of mold, and causes vomiting. This may or may not help, but I know about this in cows and don't know if it could be the same for deer. You can test feed for mold toxins.

On a totally different line, if it is as wet there as it is here, I have seen some molds growing on the ground that look like vomit. It would be obvious if you pushed them around with your boot if they were or not since they wouldn't be nearly as slimey as they look.

Ive seen deer vomit occasionally, but it was always been the case where they were eating to fast. When you check the vomit, look for partial pieces of grain and fiber. If you dont see any of that, its most likely another critters vomit. If its one of your deer and the vomiting continues make sure you find out which one it is, cause deer are not supposed to vomit and if they do continually something is very wrong!!
