Buck with Broken Rear Leg

Our largest buck broke is previously injured left rear leg. We spoke to our vet who said to just leave him be and he'll be ok. He doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything and eats and drinks fine. It's broken just above the "knee".

Anyone have any suggestions, or is this the best course of action?

This buck has really been through a lot and we really don't want to put him down over this if we don't have to. We know he probably won't breed again, but he'll just end up as one of our residents as long as he seems healthy.

As long as the bone is not protruding from the skin, he should heal ok and will still be able to breed. You could give him some Banamine as an anti inflamatory aid and to be preventative a dose of broad spectrum antibiotic (Tedradure).

I have had 5 deer with broken legs in the past few years, I only treated one. a doe that broke her front leg and the bone protruded from the skin, i had to put her down and amputated the dangling piece of leg below the knee. All the other were breaks above the foot or just below knee, i left them go and gave the deer some banamine for the first week or two.....its amazing how fast they can heal, in 2 months he'll probably be walking on it normally.

You can search the boards and find examples of how other treated broken legs. I had a vet consult with a top deer vet in my state who gave her advice on how to splint a full fracture of the tibia (above the hock). I am told that breaks below the hock are easier to treat. We had success and my girl is great.

He's doing well. Yes, it's formed and we're seeing a lot less movement of the leg. Hopefully in another few weeks, he'll be well on his way.

Thanks for asking! Happy Holidays!!!!
