One of my buck yearlings just started growing ugly little black warts under his chin. They are the size of peas, there are about 4-5 in a clump right under his chin. I just noticed it about 2 weeks ago, didnt think much of it. but now i am concerned because I noticed some on his shoulder, 1 on his stomach, and 1 near his antler. They appear to be speading and that worries me because i have seen pics of wild deer that had them all over themselves, you couldnt even see there eyes because there were so many. What should i do with this buck, I hope he cant spread these to others. They look discusting and I hoping they stop. Would it be best to put him down and have a vet remove them before they spread? I would not be comfortable doing that myself.I can get pics tommorrow if you need to see. Has anyone else had a similar expierence and if so what did you do about it. Please help, any info is appreciated.

Thank you,

Matt

Matt,

Can you get some pictures if at all possible? This may sound really dumb, but are they ticks? Let us know. Thanks

Give him a shot of Ivermec probaly parasite. Ive had those before and vet told me to use ivermec they dryed up and fell off afterwards.

Antlershed I`s say what you are seeing are called Papalomis. ( Spelling ) They look like a wart. Black in color and has dimples like a golfball. They can be removed but may just return. The ones I have encountered have stayed the summer then were licked and bit until they left later in the fall never to return. Some may be the size of a nickle and I`ve had some the size of a tennis ball. They just look ugly but not a real threat to the deer. That`s my guess.

Thanks to all for the replies, virgil I will give him a shot of ivermec, hopefully it will work like it did for your situation, Mitch i am hoping they do fall off cause they are ugly. he is very healthy and happy, he probably dosent even know he has warts, so at least they dont seem to bother him.

Yup , Mitch it's Papllomatosis and the deer should build an immunity to this wart and they should disappear !! Just an opinion !

Here are the one's on my young buck... I took the pictures today.I had them on one other buck on his back it fell off.So I wouldn't worry... I hope these are the same:confused:

painted, that is exactly what this buck has, Ive watched all week and he hasnt got anymore, the ones he has are not getting bigger.

I had a buck who had one between his eyes about three years ago. Sounds like the same thing, grew from a pea-sized bump to the size of a quarter and probably 1/2" thick. I was worried but just like a bad cough, you don't notice when it leaves, but it will.

When I was in 4-H (way back when!!).....our 4-H steers would sometimes get warts. Not all of them got it, but some did. We had a vet come out and cut them off.....this was just because of the looks of them for showing purposes. I wouldn't think that you would have to be concerned with them as it never seemed to hurt the cattle to have them....they eventually grow out of it. I know cattle aren't like deer, but warts even in people are a virus that seems to go through the system. It eventually clears up on its own.
