Button buck feeding

I know, I know; another feed question/thread. I'm not asking anyone to give away their secret family feed recipe, but here is the question: We have several button bucks that were born a bit late last year, and we have one pen devoted to button bucks. They are eating our 16% textured feed well. So...do you/ would you use anything else to supplement deer in this situation to give them a little extra "push"? I have done some research, and have some ideas, but I wanted to get some more input as well.

Jeff,

Sounds like you have the protein right about where it needs to be I would check your fat and make sure it is atleast around 6%.

Also if you would like to give them a little extra push you could and in some Whitetail Conditioner from Shock Effect Probiotics. If you would like any more info on it give me a call (573)438-7928 Randy

you are fine with that feed protien wise, as Randy already mentioned, just give the feed, some good alfalfa hay occasionally and leave a mineral block in their pens so they can lick at it when they desire it, thats really all i would think you can do.

A whitetail fawn usually does not grow from Nov-March, they put all there bodily energy into survival mode and keeping warm, then at green up they really put the weight on and their body size begins to increase, that is what i have read from researchers that study wild deer. If the same rules apply to pen deer, you will probably not notice much bodily growth until early spring no matter how good the feed. just a thought.

Jeff23, If by "push" you mean you want to fatten them up ? Top dress thier feed with Calf Manna and then top dress that with a little Extruded soybean meal.............They will fatten up nicely! If thats the kinda "push" you are looking for ?

Randy: Thanks, I may get some info from you to see what the product is all about. I used to be in the feed business, so I should know better, but I am not sure where our fat is. I think we should be in the ballpark, though.

Antlershed: With the goodies they're eating in our pens, I hope they grow some over the winter! (At least the smaller ones.)

Wayne: I'd most like to see them build some more skeleton, but having good fat reserves will help come spring. So... I want it all!! :) Calf manna is an option I had thought of, as are extruded beans. Are you using them? How do they work? Do you use them across the board, or with fawns?

Keep the ideas coming!

Jeff23, We use Extruded Soybean Meal on our bucks during antler growing time,on our does before and during nursing thier fawns and on bottle babies to help to fill them out! You will lear that its used in moderation, expecially with the fawns and some does can get a little "loose" if your not careful................The deer LOVE it!
