Are there any tell tail symptoms or signs that a deer is suffering from capture myopathy? I had a deer stuck in my fence two weeks ago. He was in there awhile before I could get to the farm. He had slack to move around and he was struggling to free himself. I was able to dart him with first shot got him out cut fence put him in a holding pen for two days, he looked better and I released. I gave him an antibiotic while he was out. He was great until two days ago. He is now lethargic and kinda zoned out. I knew capture myopathy was possibility but he looked great until two days ago. I know there is nothing I can do to stop the myopathy but I want to make sure it's not something else.

Unfortunately this buck died yesterday. The deer definately showed all the signs of capture myopathy. Below is an informative article on the subject that may be useful to others who find themselves in this situation. As you will read, the condition cannot be cured or reversed, however, there are things you can try to stop it from getting worse and limit suffering. I didn't have this information available to me at the time I darted this guy so I didn't know what to do. Whether it would have helped is anyone's guess.

Very interesting Daniel, but I'm sorry to hear that you lost this buck. Thanks for informing us of this. I appreciate it

I learned many years ago that Vit E added to the diet in large amounts before I planned to dart deer would stop capture myopathy in my whitetail and mule deer. I top dress Vit E at least a month before I plan to dart deer for antler removal. I would hope I learned a few tricks in the thirty years I have been in this business. LOL

Thanks Drew, hope it's helpful. It's been a tough two weeks, I lost three great 2 year olds. Antlers kill.

And thank you Jack, that is great advice!

I buy Vit E in a fifty pound bag from the feed mill. I have long plastic feed bunks and mix about a level tablespoon per 30 pounds of my food per day. The deer lick it all clean.

Jack, are you using a dry form of Vit. E?

I am only familiar with liquid and have been disappointed in its stability. (Ironic since it is so-posed to prolong shelf life and is the first ingredient to go rancid)

Thanks,

Tammy,

Yes it is in a dry form I believe the carrier base is soybean. It's just feed grade Vit E used as an ingredient in mixing feed for animals from our grain feed dealer.
