Several days ago I had the neighbor's dog and then the neighbors chasing their dog raise hell with my buck pen. Had bucks crashing, going though, and over the fence. Several are now in wrong pens. A half dozen are limping. Three more lost antlers crashing the fence. I've gotten all loose animals back and it looks like all will survive. The three that lost antlers, were not ready to loose them. There is some skull damage. First question, what are those antlers going to look like next year? Do hunting preserves want something like that?? Secondly, they have good insurance, what direction do I go with that? Do we have to wait till they grow their next set of antlers or wait a year or two till we would have sold them as shooters?? Any and all opinions wanted, good or bad. Thanks

antlers that ge broke out of the skull (bone), damage the growth plate 99.9999 % of the time, they will be oddly non-typical , my advice get 65% of their retail sale price from their insurance while your still talking, you want to get 100 % for those that don't grow an antler and 90 days in case they die of complications.

I have had at least three break off antlers and damage the skull. All grew antlers the next year. The base was usually larger and not round and the antler didn't grow the way it would have grown. The second year they even out some what over the first year. Every deer will differ with its damage and growth. Jim

I always wanted to have a dog mounted over my fireplace-sounds like you have a good excuse to get yourself one, too.

Thanks for the info guys. My biggest problem has always been that the deer pens are at my fathers house. Dad has never wanted to shoot the neighbors dogs. He'll shoot close to them, but never at them. Funny thing is, now he has some deer out there, and he 's finally seen the light. Doesn't matter who's dog, or why it's there, it's in trouble.

Better late than never, I guess. Thanks again.

I have a similar issue that I am in negotiations with. You can read on the blog "how do we place value on our deer?" under the Antlers Bar and Lounge.

What I ended up asking for is not only the value of the buck iteslf, but the value of the semen that I would be losing from future draws. Also the lost revenue from the fawns sired by these bucks.

I have used my arguement on the concept that our deers' antlers is what proves the value of their existence. The bigger and better the antlers are, the more valued the deer are. The more value the deer have, the more value to their semen and fawns.

If an animal has antler damage, he definitely has a tainted, reduced value. Therefore reducing the value, if not eliminating the value, of the resulting fawns and semen. I also asked for feed, housing and medical treatment for these animals, since I had to keep them longer than I expected. My injured deer were sold for this past fall. Since the damage resulted the potential buyers backed out of the deal. I don't blame them, but I feel that I should be compensated for the lost revenue. I am still in negotiations with my issue. I was on the phone for an hour and a half the other day with the insurance companies attorney. I feel that things are going my way, but they have yet to make an offer. My incident happened in August, so expect things to take a while to be satisfied.

My advice is to include anything and everything you can think of and prove. DO NOT be considerate and feel that you are asking too much. Insurance companies will only offer you a percentage of what you ask for anyways. If you would like to talk more about this I would gladly give you all the information that I have. 304-288-4090

Ask for 3 million dollars..........then begin negotiations down from there. Your mental anguish is worth alot. Aren't you having problems sleeping because you think you hear barking dogs? Isn't it hard to sit down and watch TV or eat supper without thinking you hear fences rattling? Are you apprehensive to return home each day from work because you dread finding out you had another dog visit? When you see a stray dog within a mile of your farm do you turn around and go back home and sit on your porch with a loaded shotgun? Make the case for yourself. If any of you that have had dog attacks disagrees with my reasons for anguish feel free to comment.

Well, some may have heard of my horror story of a dog killing 29 of my deer. 13 bucks the first night and an estimated total of $150,000 in deer. In Ohio a farmer can kill a dog for merely looking in the direction of any livestock which is the ONLY solution to the problem. The dog came back to my pens 3 different times, his third was his last. Some states permit you to pursue the dog and kill it where ever or whenever you catch up to it. Dont think that this is an isolated incident.......the dog will be back. SHOOT SHOVEL SHUT-UP. you are lucky.....you know who the owner is, I was not so lucky.

We had a dog kill one of our bucks his insurance covered just had to get a value on the deer so i gave them a few other deer farmers numbers, of course we got ahold of the farmers first if you know what i mean

Thanks everyone. I've gotten a lot of good info from around the country. What I would really like now, is to talk to someone form Iowa that has any experience dealing with these insurance issues. I have a feeling this is going to be one of those bad experience's that I'll never forget. 515-203-0319 Thanks again
