Cracked skull plate!

I have a 2.5 yr. old buck that got spooked this morning, spun around and ran into a wood post breaking his left antler off at the base of the pedicle. When I looked at the antler base I noticed a piece of his skull plate about the size of a nickel broke off too.Very little bleeding. My bucks don't naturally shed until the middle of next month. My concern is that this injury may cause that antler to be deformed next year and even worse in the years to come. Has anyone had something like this happen to your buck and how did it effect him? Tom

Yea, you'll see some deformity next year. However, there is always a chance that in years to come it will improve. It may never be perfect, but it could certainly get close. Just didn't want you to lose all hope :) Only time will tell.

Many of our bucks shed significant pieces of their "skull-plate" naturally. It has very little if any effect on next season's growth. Take a picture of the antler and post it so we can see if it is actually skull bone or just deep pedicle material.

I agree with Scott...There is a chance there will be no Damage...

If so there is a great chance it could get better the next year.

I would not give up hope at all.

It would help to see pictures, but doesn't sound bad to me.
