Cross breeding different species:

Has anybody tried or know of someone who has tried cross breeding different species of deer. I know of a Ranch here in Lee County where they are breeding Red Deer with Elk. Like Whitetails with Axis, or something like that.

The only cross we have in Montana that occures in nature is the cross between whitetail and mule deer. I believe that I have read that the mule deer was created by the overlapping areas of whitetail and black tail deer and the breeding between the two types, much like the stone sheep was created by the overlapping areas of the Alaskan Dall and the Rocky Mountain bighorn.

If it Dont Happen Naturally, then Best left up to mother alone. Critic,s really love that creating ,and in a pen!! Ps Good Luck Jack,in your Breeding, Dc

Thanks DC and the same wishes with your AI program. I'm very interested in how you make out with the intercept method. We ourselves are very late this year in our AI program as we have been helping one of the family members build his new house. Family and friends still comes first in my life. I would have AI'd our whitetail Nov. 23 but will be doing them Dec 2 and 3rd. We will not use a back up buck this year as the fawns would be late.

I was wondering if it was even possible, on our last deer lease several years back there were Whitetail and Axis on it and the owner claimed there was a few crossed animals on the place, but on the Ranch I live on now, I don't think there is. I wonder what they would look like???????

We seen Lama and Buck trying, both wanting bad as other.:D:D Like Jack said Overlapping. i guess when you restricted to once a yr lookout! Anything possible:eek::eek:gotta be line somewhere,DC, Ps Jack, intercept was Fun,I had not a clue, how or this was gonna unfold, it just did! i found real quick i couldnt run like used to. had to figure easier way. :cool:and trick was, Dont open gate to Check Doe.Rut goes on even behind 8ft fence.I got Ai exp all i after.i will always do standind heat:) Dc No intercept to it,dont mingle till standing! Um, I have no clue what you were trying to say there!

We had a bottle raised Axis doe that would breed to this bottle raised Whitetail buck every year. She'd carry the fetus almost to term, but would abort every year. So I would say, yes, they will breed, but the offspring won't survive.

Did you ever find out why she would abort? I wonder if you bred a whitetail doe to an Axis buck if the results would be different.

Im Just Assuming her aborting, cause not meant to be! Nature,s Way

That would be opinion also. If God didn't intend for something like that to happen then it won't happen.

I was looking for something a little more scientific about why she would abort than just "God's will be done."

the gestation of axis doe is eight to eight an one half months.they breed thru out the year.they will breed but will not survive cross breedin. eather way you breed it won`t work out.the whitetail doe will have to soon.the axis doe will have it to late.all fails.robert

what is the gestation period of whitetails? Fallow? Sike? etc?

ramo9. gestation whitetails 200 days more or less.fallow 229 days ,sika 7 an one half months.robert

With Fallow and Whitetail being close I wonder if it would work crossing those two.

I just have a hard time believing that it is the gestation period that throws the whole thing outta whack, but I'm not a vet either.

even whitetail / mule deer cross gives a significant number of sterile animals both bucks and does

I just had an Idea..... DC this might be just what you need

Curtis, I do Hope it wasnt to much strain on your Brain, Having Them Ideas:eek::D Does it happen often?? Probably just untwawed little.:D Or ate to much TURKEY!!
