Cut or not to cut

We have five 1 1/2 year olds and 3 three year olds in the same pen. We are going to sell two of the 3 year olds and keep the one because he hit the fence early on and messed his antlers up. Should we cut him and leave him with the 1 1/2 year olds. We arent planning on cutting the 1 1/2 year olds. Or should we leave his horns on him. The other option would be to cut him and put him in with our 2 year olds which we are going to cut.

Cut every damn one of them. If you put the 3 year old in with the 2 year olds now, cut or uncut, you will have dead or injured deer, guaranteed. Jeff

I agree with Jeff. We USED to think keeping one per pen with antlers kept everyone straight and the antlered buck would break any fights. Last year- in one of the pens, the one that had his antlers left on did some sticking and it wasn't good at all. CUT THEM ALL!!!

Cut them all even the yearlings. Last year we had 3 yearlings gang up on 1 yearling and had him down and would have killed him but my dad and brother got them off of him just in time. They all had their antlers but he couldn't fight all 3 of them.

Any buck with hard antlers should be cut if he is in a pen smaller than 100 acres. This is for YOUR safety and will ensure there will be no other deer gored. It is totally irresponsible and frankly STUPID to leave hard antlers on a deer in a pen humans enter. I know you may think your deer is different, but unless his body makes a different type of testosterone than any other deer on the planet you are wrong, and could be DEAD WRONG.

We only cut our breeder bucks. We have 125+ bucks in 4 pens and we might lose maybe 3 bucks a year. The bucks are kept in pens according to age and pen size ranges from 1-2 acres. If we ran 125 bucks through the chute we would lose at least 3-4 and darting is not realistic. I agree if you have a handfull of bucks cut them to be on the safe side.

Hands down, absolutely, without a doubt cut them all off all the time. I don't care if it is a pen full of year olds that summered together - cut them off H&S. Do not be tempted not to.
