wanting to plant our pens this week and alot of the trends say cut the pens is this ok on 100 x 200; penns dont want any wall bangers going with maybe crabgrass and clover

thanks Ed

I cut all the deer pens for Browning Whitetails and are dimensions are similar to yours

120'x300' or so. I mow two passes around the whole inside of the pen at the end and mow the whole front half of the pens. The deer get used to the mower and stay in the back while i mow the front and when i mow around the inside they just kindof push themselves around the pen just don 't separate anybody and don't corner anybody. I have never had an accident with any of the deer while mowing. One other tip in the heat of the summer i like to wait until later evening to mow the pens so it is a little cooler. Also fawn season is just around the corner and the little bugers like to lay right on the edge of the mowed grass and you never know which way they are gonna go when they get up so be careful. Hope this helps a little bit.

Browning, well said we mow the same way! One thing we do though is leave a strip about 12' to 15' wide un-mowed in the pen for the fawns to hide in and for shelter from the sun and elements and it's were they lay and makes it quick to take an check on them during the day. It is also were most of the does have thier fawns. Good Luck!

Wayne great advice that is exactly what I do as well.......the deer love the high grass to lay in so it is good to leave them that strip!!

Yeah rite Dennis the last time i helped you look for a fawn the grass was up to my neck and we had about two acres of it to go threw.

first of all Virgil your just jealous cause your pens are all dirt year around.....your poor goats have not a clue what fresh clover or alpalpha tastes like. second, if you call sitting on the mule watching while i did all the work help then I guess you helped?!! I will say that in the pen you are talking about i did not leave a strip but left a bunch of smaller squares throughout the pen and did find out that leaving a strip is a lot easier!! Now if memory serves me right I recall it took us a lot longer to find a fawn in your pen than it did in mine and I am the one who had to find the one at your place.

WE also leave some of the pen grow probably 40-50% but it is like you all said in strips from 10-15 foot wide. I don't care if the grass is knee high iv'e walked pens three four even five times looking for fawns. Wait until you have a older group of ten or so and your checking and they keep jumping up and going to lay somewere else and get counted twice. Good times in the deer pens.

Yeah....it is amazing how those little fawns can hide so well ........all part of the fun.......kind of like the days of hunting for Easter Eggs!!!
