My grandfather worked and lived in the woods his whole life. He killed the first deer he had ever seen in 1932. It took 3 days to find someone who knew what it was. The deer were "restocked" in the south in the 1930's and 1940's. It is an interesting question of what happened to the deer prior to that time. There was atleast 50 years with no deer in South Alabama because my grandfathers dad was born in 1878 and had never seen one until grandad killed the one in 1932. We will probably never know what or when something happened to the deer in the South but I know Alabama and Mississippi we restocked.
The Mississippi Delta was stocked three times with Northern deer and once with Southern's. Even today many 50/50 mixes are killed in the Delta. Alabama got the Virginia deer which we now call Southern's.
