Dark colored antler?

Bell, I'm sure our deer are rubbing on different things over in this part of the country. I do notice that by the time my older wild bucks shed out which sometimes isn't until March-April most years, they are pretty much all bleached out white. Before I started my year round feeding program, my wild bucks would drop antlers Jan-Feb. Just the added body condition and no stress of getting harassed has made them keep the antlers on a lot longer. Most of our bucks here live in the big sunflower fields which is really sappy and I see a lot of them rub the velvet off on the stalks which are really sticky. This could have something to do with keeping them darker too. I don't know if you have a big enough pen where you could plant some but it might be worth a try. You can plant them late as they grow super fast, most guys around here just got theirs in the ground a week or so ago so you still have time to try! It would have to be a pen where they can't get at em early or they will eat em as soon as they pop up. Deer love sunflowers, both to eat and bed in because they can see thru the stems for danger and the stalks don't rattle in the wind like corn.

I read up on black oil sunflower oil and how it can stain. I gained some knowledge that I enjoyed. The sediment in unfiltered sunflower oils will stain food cooked with it dark. I do have some extra space in a pen across my creek where I can plant about a 5 acre patch. I intend to plant some iron and clay peas with the sunflowers. They climb the stalks and will add some more protein. I can leave the bucks out of that area till the sunflowers mature hopefully by the end of August. I will post the results this fall.

Your info was very helpful. Thanks very much!
