We just started deer farming this summer and we had our first die today my question is what could i do to have helped this and what was it. Yesterday she was her self eating treats out of our hand and a while later she has breathing very very fast, but we had just made their pen twice the size and she had been running so we thaught nothing of it any ideas on what it couild be that killed her also is there anything that grows in the woods that they coukld eat and kill them because the new part of their fence is wooded thank you very much everyone

Poke Berry Is Also Very Poisonous to deer. Even the Root.
You need to Dig the plant out. I get rid of the Dirt that was close to the root as a precaution....It more than likely is pneumonia Though.

mine eat wild cheerry and the dead, got polk i just let it be they wont touch! only to know for sure necropsy was in order if you dont mind spending money on dead deer ,but it can teach you something. DC

I would have to agree with Billy Jo on the pnuemonia! Sorry for your loss it a sucky feeling that doesn't get easier!
by everything i read it was pneumonia thats why its called livestock ya have to keep them alive thanks guys
yes we had one coughing the other day and treated her with antibiotic and cleared it right up also since then i have been treating the water also
What are you treating water with? I've tried water-soluable oxytetracyclene in the water, but can't tell if it made a difference or not.
oif she dont ghet better fast id treat for lungworm might be suprized good luck on rest hope you get it under control! just what roades said livestock. better get use to one dying once in awhile. just because. DC
Last year I had trouble with deer and fawns getting sick, I had a couple of them die. I was having to give shots and treat them a lot. This year I started giving them probotics in there milk and also started mixing probotics with my feed. Every deer I own get's probotics in there feed every day. Not sure if that is the reason but this year I have not had to give any shot's or had a single deer sick in any way. My fawns are growing faster and all of my deer are healthy.
dont rule out lung worm sounds like mild case,if you catch in time if bleeding you can usually save, lots antibotics and probotics,i seen em die quick till i treated for lung worms . just never know. coulde be pnewmonia,good luck DC
some states like the south, it no good no more i did learn that. wont hurt i wuold give some probotics. if treated for lungworm. some times you just gotta throw med cabinet at them give just give some time but dont good probotic. chance to. if bad enough to die should see more phyisical sign if newmonia. with rapid breathing sounds like mild case of lung worm. usuaolly pnewmonia should have higher temp and sometimes squirts. and lung constriction. coughing up yellow mucus. just ones opinion DC
New pen... lots of new forage... sounds like overeaters to me. Healthy as can be one day and dead the next. Many times when you find one dead from overeaters their stomach will be bloated and they will have blood coming out of their rectum. We always give C&D antitoxin to our fawns before letting them into a new pen.

I would not use Corid Very often IN MY OPINION You can cause Amprolium poisoning...Amprolium is a Thiamin Inhibitor,and can cause death if not used correctly....It also may stunt Antler Growth...
Also I don't Think it does anything for worms...
Corid is a coccidicidal used in either Treating or Preventing coccidiosis...

Billie jo you are right!!!I had a new deer i brought in and she was loaded with it and the vet gave me a heavy dose of corrid for the treatment...I have never heard of it used for worms myself...Safeguard and corrid must be taking care of robert and with just a sprinkle probably wont overdose but i wouldnt give it in my bucks water at all times..
thanks for the input.......i HAD the worming under control (have a worming routine that I use for my Boers and Pygmies) , was curious about the Corrid useage of how often....
runny eyes, cough with musus, higher temp sometimes squirts, losing weight, the corid was widley used and safegaurd, causing resitance to it like using everday, not using it right, rotating it, and widley used, that why usless in south and some lower states, but if using think it helps dont fix! whaty works for you, not others, DC
