Deer Fawn Help Really Confused

Okay so I've had a baby fawn for about 6 - 7 weeks now

When he came beating down my front door (literally) His eye were not blue he could stand on his own and would drink from a cup

So he did really well on manapro multi nurse for fawns and other animals from a cup and then we purchased a red nipple that attaches to a soda bottle because someone said that was better. We also gave the occasional pumpkin and yogurt.

Anyway one night he started having facial twitching and was laterally recumbent. I'm an emergency veterinary technician so I rushed him to my job. We treated him like a puppy for several days on IV Fluids with dextrose but he just was not maintaining his Blood Glucose level. We also noticed some tiny puss pockets on his ears. We gave baytril and they seemed to go away. Deer baby was not doing well and since non of our vets know anything about deer I got in touch with someone who did.

So He suggested no alfalfa but baby spinach and as much as he wants. PLus 3-4oz formula every 4 hours plus 5mls Nutrical every 4 hours and baby gas drops .6mls twice a day so thats what we did and like a miracle Deer Baby got better.

So after about 2 weeks we tried to space out the formula more because I'm no longer able to take him to work with me. He gets crazy in the car and hurts his nose on the kennel doors so theres no one to feed him when I'm not home. So we tried 6oz of formula every 6 hours. I added back in some yogurt and he got a little diarrhea so I added back in some pumpkin. Baby deer stopped taking the nutrical so we cut that out.

Deer baby is still eating really well and still super active but now has a little diarrhea, The puss pockets on the ears are back and tonight I heard him make like a coughing/gagging noise. When I went in to check on him he seemed fine wanted to lick at me and jump on me. Ate dinner fine is eating spinach. I dont think he's bloated but maybe the left side is a tiny bit bigger than the left though not noticeable enough I was just staring intently. I ran out of gas drops the other day got more and now I'm going to give some of that. I'm not giving the yogurt or the pumpkin regularly and I dont know what to do next. I don't want him to get sick again. What do I do and I need like serious serious detail because Myself and my vets are so unfamiliar with Deer. I spent my whole last paycheck trying to keep him alive. I love him and I want him to be okay. We're thinking about introducing some coastal hay for horses? The spinach is $5 a box and he goes through almost 2 a day and we just cant afford that anymore. What do I do? How do I keep him healthy and safe? I hate to be a pain but please try to be as specific as possible being an ER nurse I think advice to death lol. Thank you so much in advance

I have no idea why that deer farmer would've suggested spinach instead of alfalfa. Spinach would naturally make their stools loose and give him lots of gas! If it's been working so far , then great but I would SLOWLY transition him to alfalfa. It has to be mainly leaf! Any change with the feed has to be such a slow process with deer....they're so easily effected. I use Chaffhaye with my herd. Its awesome....you could contact Kimber Davis with Chaffhaye and tell her you need some of their 20 oz bags ASAP!!! They're fairly cheap and it's as if the deer was foraging fresh rather than eating dusty dry hay.

I'm not sure about the puss in the ears, never seen that. Be aware that in this crazy heat we've seen, deer can get pneumonia easily. (coughing, weezing) Have you offered him any dirt in a dish? From day one, your supposed to put some dirt (just from your yard) in a dish next to his feed.....he receives the bacteria native to his environment through that...very important! Also important you get your hands on some Bo-Se. You can get it through PBSAnimalHealth.com It's a Vit E and Selenium injection. Most deer are born with a Selenium deficiency due to the lack of it in our soil when mom was pregnant. I've had fawns almost on their deathbed and gave them this inj....and within an hour, they're up and walking around....awesome stuff!

don't vaccinate for everything under the sun...not necessary....too much is bad too. I vaccinate mine for ecoli within the first 24 hours, then wait until they're a year old to vaccinate with Covexin 8 and Fusogard. Don't worry about the rest. Eventually you'll have to find a rehaber in your area to take over for you. Best done sooner rather than later, the more human contact he has, the less likely it is he can be returned to the wild.

You should receive a ton more responses on here. Everyone has their own way of doing things so your answers will vary.....doesn't always make it easy!

Some of these guys have been dealing with deer for 20+ years so they will know more than me.....good luck:) If I find any more info on the ear issue or the coughing, I'll post it for you.
