Has anyone used canola meal in deer feed ? I hear that it has about 40 % protien lots cheaper than soybean .I just thought I would ask around could be a real cost saver .

robert it is the meal left over after they press and heat conola seeds to get out the conola oil. I do know conola is mostly grown in Canada and northern US they just started growing it down south during the winter, in place of winter wheat .

My pellet feed maker substituted canola meal without asking me. Made it cheaper for someone but not me. My pellets lasted seven months when they are gone when made with soybean meal in 90 days. If your expecting the deer to get their minerals from that pellet source the deer have to eat the right amount. I would say the deer didn't like canola meal at all. That is how my deer responded to canola meal.

My cousin grew some a two years ago to press to make bio-diesel. He gave my some of the flake that was his bi product. Granted it wasnt dried or anything but I tried it anyhow. My deer never touched it. Then i put a pile outside the fence and the wild ones didnt touch it either.

great to know thanks for the heads up guys no need to feed it they will not eat it .

Here in Saskatchewan we have millions of acres of Canola,..... I don't use any in our feed ration. Unless it is processed properly into a feed ( mostly hog feed), it will quickly become rancid as it is it has a short shelf life when mixed with other ingredients. Canola meal is quite hydroscopic. Soy meal can be dried much easier than canola meal and the canola has a high shell to pulp ratio which unlike soy you cannot make flour. Crushed processed seed is the onlyproduct there would be to add into feed. Adding canola oil to feed to boost the protein is another idea, Canola has 0% trans fats and 0 cholesterol
