Deworming Fawns???

I just have a few quick questions for everyone. How old do you wait for your fawns to be dewormed? What do you find easiest to use? Once you catch them do you give any other shots or vaccines at this time? I was thinking that you dewormed at two weeks old but at the same time the little guys are getting hard to catch so when does everyone else take care of these problems??? And which drugs are the most important? Thanks Alot.

If they are too hard to catch, use a feed through product like Safeguard pellets, or drench some feed with either ivomec or cydectin, let it dry, and then put it out for them to eat. I wait until at least 4 weeks to worm, unless I get something out of a fecal float that tells me to act otherwise.

Im sure I can catch them all but its just going to take a little time. I have a bunch of bottle feds too that Im wondering when I need to deworm and if I need to give any vaccines or anything to prevent future problems. Do any of you use ivomec injectable or safeguard paste?? How are the results? Thanks

T.R.O. I use ivomec injectable on all fawn born. I have found that if the fawns get a dirty bottom while the mother is taking care of them flys will hatch (magots) in the soiled area on the fawn. When the magots suck the body fluid they will die from the ivomec. I use a 1/4 cc shot SQ. It seems to work for about thirty days. Just my opinion.

Jack and Susan, Thanks for the replys!! Would you consider any other vaccines or do you just let the body build its immunities? We did CD antitoxin at birth and now we are going to use ivomec. Thanks for the help

Every farm is different for what they will have as a disease problem. Never don't use a fawn that dies. By this I mean have any dead fawn tested for what it died from and have them find out what antibiotic would have helped you save it. If there is a product that would give the fawn help while it builds it's own immunity use it. Build the immunity through the females if you can so they can pass it to the fawn through the milk.

I have had a fuso problem which we went after through the females and gave fuso shots to the fawns. We went from 30% to less than 1% in two years.

We had a Rota-Coronavirus from our cattle get into the deer through the ground or water. We gave calf Guard to the females and a oral dose at birth within the first 12 hours of birth. This virus is not a problem anymore. But we had to identify the problem so as to know how to address it. A dead fawn should never be wasted, test them so you know what you are dealing with.

As far as what I give the fawns at birth we give: Bo-se, Thiamine, Vit B and Poly serum and Calf Guard.

I lost a fawn this morning, not sure what was the cause. Looked great last night. I would like to send her in to see what was the cause. Can someone tell me where to send it and how it's done? Thanks

Brett, The quickest way is contact your Vet and he will send it in to the State lab. You should store it in a refridge as soon as you can as this will keep it from spoiling.
