We darted a soon to be 2 year old doe for TB & B testing yesterday and today she is still lumbering around. We used a 6 to 1 ratio of the 100 xylazine ( 2 cc ). Tonight I noticed If she tried to walk too fast she stumbles and has to catch herself. She tried to shake her fur and she only could do it very slowly, so her movements are very deliberate and she looks to be a little uncomfortable. She is eating some but not as much as normal. While we had her down we also gave her Ivomec injectable ( 2 cc ), LA- 200 ( 7cc ) and Vitamin B Complex. We are suppose to dart her again Friday to check The TB injection site. I don't know if she will be to weak to knock down again. I have talked to a couple of people but would like some more input.

Thanks...Dave

Dave, Some deer are affected differently but for the most part they should be back to normal by day Number 3. On day number two some may act normal and some act stiff. Last year i had to tb test and redart on day number 3. i was nervous but all went well.

Dave - how much reversal did you give her and at what interval after darting?

Maybe try giving a heavy dose of bose next time you put down.

This seems to give them a extra boost of energy.

If you are able to get your hands on her, I would give her a little banamine and either thiamine or b-complex.

She seemed a little better today, I would say she is at about 50% today. I am hoping by tomorrow she will be even better. If she looks stable enough to dart again I think I am going to try a 1cc dart with the same mix or a 2cc dart with 1 1/2 cc in it. I don't know which is better or if I should add saline solution or distilled water to fill the rest of the 2cc dart. I cant get my hands on her to give her the Banamine but I will give her some if I dart her again tomorrow.

I always give banimine and b-12 when i have darted anything along with all their normal vaccinations. They both help with the recovery but still seems to take about 3 days till they are back to normal on average. It took one yearling of mine 3 days and another one was acting normal within a day and they were twin brothers at about the same body weight. Every deer reacts differently that is why i keep a log of how they acted so the next time i dart that animal i can change doeses if i feel it is needed.

Personally I would not dart the animal again. An animal under stress from darting will more than likely have a worse reaction from darting the second time. I would think the stress would cause her death. Just my opinion

We are under the impression that you should not dart a pregnant doe this late in gestation with Telazol. The lable states not to use it on pregnant animals.

thanks

Karl

Thanks for your concern Jack and Karl, The doe was doing much better by day 3 and I cut the dose in half. I used a 6 to 1 mix but only darted with a 1 cc dart. When I reversed her after 50 min. she came out real well and in 2 hours both does that were darted were eating and drinking and for the most part back to normal. it has been 3 days since the last darting and both does are totally fine again. I think from talking to others, these does were real calm and did not require the 2 cc I gave the first doe. Also these does are both open so no I didn't have to worry about darting a pregnant doe.

Thanks...Dave

I would think 2cc is a bit excessive on the tame doe as you described her. I would have used 1.2cc on a mature tame doe that was not preggers. It may have taken a few minutes longer for her to become sedated, but the effects would have been less harsh on her. Tailoring the dosage rate to the animal's temperment and individual metabolisim is an art, not a science and each case is different. Repeated experiences with the same animal is an invaluable commodity.

I just darted 4 of my doe fawns from last year and they were all pretty big. I used 1/2cc darts with triple strenght rompum and they went out good gave them each 1cc of reverser and within 5 minutes they were all up and walking around fine.
