Thanks again for this forum. It has been a blessing for me. I am posting this for a very good friend of mine. He does not have internet available to him. He has a small breeding facility about three acres. It is divided into five seperate pens. He had a few fawns die this year and it was determined that they had ecoli? His pens are spotless. Is there anything he can do to clean the pens?(Borax, Lime)? Thanks

Lime, Lime and more Lime. We keep pelleted lime in the pens all through spring and summer and knock on wood have never had an problem with Ecoli or anything for that matter.

Stray dogs are the biggest problem around here but the 22mag takes care of most of them.

Can you treat the area with the deer in the pen with lime. Or should you move them? If you move them how long before the deer can go in the pen?

Todd,

I had E-coli last year in a few pens. We closed down the pens and put lime on them. I left the pens empty for one year. I did fawn out in one pen to see if it was usable. The fawns in that pen are about one month old with no sign of E-coli. I did give the does Scourguard 4kc and all fawns Bar guard and Immunoboost. Something worked as I didn't get any scours this year.

Nick are you sure 2000# per acre I didn't use anywhere close to that? More like 1/4 of that.

Jack- sounds great. You can add uniprim powder to feed daily. Sulfa drug antibiotic. One scoop(4tbsp) per 1100 lbs body wt once a day for 7 days. We add up all wt in Pen and add to treat(textured feed) and toP dress daily x 7 days. Good luck, God bless

I use about 1000lbs of pelleted lime per acre in March and 500lb per acre again in May and 500lbs again in Aug. The deer stay in the pen year round.

yeah, 2000 pound per acre is way too much. How thick would you like to ice that cake??

I lime my pens every other year and apply about 300 pounds per acre.

Ag lime rate in southern il for row crops and pasture is 2 ton per acre. Not all ag lime is the same. If you want to get technical you need to find out the 4 year base source correction factor. If applied at the correct rate you will only have to lime your pens every 4 or 5 years. Now if you have areas that there are high concentrations of animals you may need to do these areas more frequently. Ie. Feeders water troughs etc...

Sorry for the geeky engineering answer.

With lime we are adjusting the ph level in the ground. Get a soil sample and get it tested.

If you want to kill bad bacteria then use hydrated lime, it works fast and you dont need as much!!
