Jason and Scott, It is here and showed up at our farm the first week in April. It is a very nasty strain and according to Texas A&M is EHD-2. It seems to be causing toxemia in pregnant does. Vaccinations and medications have little to no effect on curbing this virus.

When will our state organizations finially realize that EHD is the REAL threat to the Whitetails herds in America.......all this money wasted on CWD studies when it could have been put towards EHD research and cures for our Whitetails........it doesn't make much sense.........sorry to hear about the EHD problems you guys are experiencing so early.......

LBC is stating the truth in west and north central La. The April rains and temperatures have been conducive to midge production here. Several deer farmers have lost significant portions of their herds to EHD....yes necropsies were perforrmed and EHD confirmed...and many of those farms are on strict vaccination protocols, which have had little effect in thwarting the disease. The most frequently affected deer are the 50%+ Northern Genetic animals. The $500 wonder cure has been virtually ineffective on the animals that have contracted EHD. Now before you go off critiquing my post.....I have just given you my observations of recent weeks. I don't care if you believe in the vaccine or the expensive treatment shot, I am simply stating what I have seen in my area.

I've heard the same reports from 2 farmers in LA that we do business with. Despite a large investment in the "new" EHD vaccine and misting; there have been significant losses on both farms. We feel for all of you guys suffering from this nasty disease.

I am sorry for your losses in LA. This really saddens me.

Will someone please tell me what geographies are included in deer with "Northern genetics"?

Lana, anything north of Bunkie La is Northern..........just kidding, from my experience anything north of southern Missouri or northern Oklahoma is considered Northern in my circles

Does anybody know what the EHD "cure" consists of ? I've wondered if its just some pre combined cocktail of already used treatments or is it something brand knew ?

This is what Dr. Joe Ables from TX suggests as a treatment for EHD:

I've seen a tremendous amt of EHD this year, even in full south tx genetics. I've had good luck with dexamethasone at 5cc per 100 lbs im and 3 cc per 100 lbs sq excede. Don't use banamine.

He says not to use Banamine but it can cause ulceration of the GI tract, etc.

This is additional information I've read about treating EHD (I have no personal experience with this):

Steroids are the most important to stop the virus from destroying the blood vessels. add 2 cc dexcamethasone(2mg/ml) im with excede(3cc per 100 sq) and banamine(1cc per 100 im).. Forget about not using NSAIDs and Steroids at the same time if you want them to live.. EHD/BTV cuases the immune system to over react and causes all the blood vessels to ooze, dexamethasone will stop the autoimmune disturbance and will help your deer with this viral problem.

IF I WERE YOU, I WOULD CONTACT DR. CLIFFORD SHIPLEY AT UNIV OF IL and ask him for advice. I will forward his cell phone number to us via private mssg.

Im new in the B/T EHD treatment, only 7 days, but I have been watching for signs hard and treating aggressivly. I havent lost an animal yet!!!! ( Knock on wood) I watched close the past few years and did well with preventive antibiotics. This dry/hot year is our first encounter.

I posted the following on another thread concerning this. My Symptoms/ treatment is based on my talking with exceptional Vets and personal experience.

Blood sample every animal you treat!!!!!!!!!

I drive my samples to the University Vet school for testing. Your local Vet can mail it, just takes a few more days.

I was worried about EHD, but its similar to B/T. We have a mister system in all our pens that are timed to spray 14 times per day. Its hard to find a fly, let alone a mig in our pens. But, with that said!

I have had some animals get sick in the last few days. Im use to dealing with pneumonia during the hot dry weather, but these guys just didnt seem right. The first one I tested showed + for blue tongue.

Im going to cover the symtoms then my treatment. Please dont trust my treatment, although its working perfect for me, consult your vet!!!!!!

My deer are breathing heavy/ mouth open when its still cool.

Looking confused.

Walking lightly, which I think is sore joints from fever.

constant blinking.

Arched back.

Just over all odd acting.

3 out of the 5 I have treated have had a temp over 105.9

Its the high temp that kills them!

The only way to check the temp is to sedate them. Its hot, and there sick, bad time. But, an ounce of treatment is worth a pound of cure.

Here is what I do.

If they show 2 or more of the signs.

I dart them.

Check temp ( First thing to do)

If its infection high, I immediately place them on a tarp. Put bags of ice covering there entire body. ( due to ambient ground temp, I put a garden hose under them to carry the cool from the ice)

Start fluids, subQ. ( I do subQ because EHD and B/T compramise the vascular system) I add Dextrose to my ringer solution.

I administer

4cc dexajet per 100lb im

5cc exceed per 100 subQ

6cc vitB complex subQ subQ

Then I continue the fluids and sedation until the fever drops to 101.

This can be be hard if your not use to keeping you animal down for more than an hour. The right amout of sedation is crucial to saving them.

I follow up daily, dex one day, draxxine the next. ( dart) for 6 days.

If they dont have the fever, ( you caught it early ) I just give the first treatment and reverse when its time. Then follow up with draxxine in 2 days. Watching there systems to see if I need to include medication to help them.

I hope this helps. Im early in this but its working perfect for me. I think the biggest thing is the ice bath if they have a high temp. Cool them fast and it helps greatly.

Id be interested to here any comments or success stories.

Dr. Joe said that 80% of infected animals will not survive sedation.

I work close with him in my treatment and have found that with ice and water on the animal during sedation, 100% will wake up!!!!!

Just my results!!!!!
