Hi everyone, please forgive me if some of you think I am kicking a ". " horse .

The few people that I have talked to about the signs of EHD, well what they saw were, The signs that I saw with MY deer (Babies) that happened at the Very Very End!

My question is, would you please tell me What was the FIRST signs,The ONES that triggered you to say HEY, watch out there may be something wrong here?

1. I noticed that they were having problem drinking from the bottle. Like their tongue was in the way.

2. Very "clingy" to me, more that usual.

3. SMALL!!!! Amount of drooling.

4. Foam, not really enough to mention compared to others, at the corner of mouth.

5. Death with in 12 hours.

What are your signs?

I am So Sorry for each of the losses that we have gone through.

Thank you

laying off by themselves was usually the first sign

don't have that I'm gonna run look to their eyes

stiff movement, sore feet

slobbering, ulcers in the mouth

bottle jaw

blood shot eyes

swelling around the eyes

some had diarrhea

hanging around the water-they say but we only had one of 16 do that

death

so you can tell we had a wide array of signs in all 16

If yours were clingy I would seriously wonder if they had it

Clostridium might be something to consider can cause sudden death, may eat one meal dead the next

you can always learn if you open them up or have your veterinarian do a necropsy if they die, the visual signs may be enough to give you a best guess

Remi, Sounds like clostridium. Remember though that clostridium needs a route of infection (irritation in the gut) that can be caused by many things such as coccidia or other parasites.

Hi, Thank you for your replies. I know that my babies died of EHD. Hate that disease! I begged for the 2 labs (Auburn & Elba) to check for toxin, poisoning,Anything else! I will put it this way, they will not talk to me right now. There were worms. Which I have been worming. Auburn said that it was EHD. But said no to clostridium, coccidia, & 2 others. There was some ecoli.

Remi, this is what I've seen over the years

1. swollen mouth/tongue and drooling

2. tenderness of feet, walking gingerly

3. pained look in eyes

4. death with no warning, fed at 8pm, dead at 7am. Blood around mouth.

5. redness around eyes, mouth

6. swelling around eyes, usually accompanied with one or more of the above.

from July 1 on you need to closely look at every deer you have at least twice a day. Change your feeding so that they run out and will come to the feeder as you fill it every morning and evening. Pain in the butt but you get a CLOSE look at the deer. Hit em hard and early at any sign of EHD.

Thank you for replying. These symptoms happened to me Right before death. I had been treating them for at a least a week almost two.

I just feel like I am missing something important. Or am I just crazy?

I am very fortunate that I am with my deer (all 4 now) almost all day every day.

They stay in the same pen(s). But do sometimes lay away from each other.

When my two that were sick, did not want to be by themselves until a few hours before death.

Please keep replying..... It is really helping me, and hopefully some other farmers,as well.

the earliest sign we normally seeis that their hair will Bristle all over.

Hey Scott,

Thank you. Can a 2 month old fawn catch EHD? I am thinking yes.

Just put my 2 month old baby out in the pen with the others. I have noticed that her hair is standing up like you rubbed her the wrong way.

I had a sample checked and said that she had worms. So I wormed Everyone. She looks a little better.

I have lost 2 in September . These are my starter herd and My pets, My Babies. I still cry form my losses, But, cowgirl up!

I am worried, in your opinion, what would you do the the fawn? I have 2 yearling does with a 3 1/2 month old fawn.

My 2 month old usually stays in the house with me. She has been in the pen for about 2 - 2 1/2 weeks now, due to being sick and I did not want her to catch AnyThing!

Would you start her on any meds?

What is your Opinion?

Thank You

a two month old can catch EHD

a lot of young fawns have hair standing like you say, not necessarily EHD

Thank you. I am not afraid to jump in to do what is needed to be done, I am analytical I am told.

But, I do not want to jump too soon, and dang sure do not want to jump Too late.

Did you have this problem when you started out? Or am I the Only paranoid E.T. Here? :)

I started 30+ years ago and plodded along till the last 10 years when the learning curve steepened a LOT. I know 1000X what I knew 10 years ago and still 1/100 of what I need to know.

I hate I learned a lot of stuff too late to help some early ones but it is what it is.....this site has more knowledge about deer health/meds than most any 10 vets combined, not counting Dr Joe.

Now a hard question for me is when i first see the signs, I hit them hard with meds. I am fighting for their lives, i am a point where they are just hanging on. Not getting better but not getting worse. What do you do, they are full of meds. Do I stop the meds and see what happens, or if I continue with the meds, am I wasting the meds at some point?

I hit some with the kitchen sink last year and made absolutely no difference.  Others kept treating and they made it.  Don't know unless you try.

I would just keep an eye on the fawn. I never medicate unless im sure what im up against. My opinion on medicating deer with ehd is as follows. Heavy doses of steroids and draxxen for ehd types 1&2. For strain 6 start digging the hole as soon as you can. No drug therapy or vaccination protocol will help. This is my opinion. It is what I have experienced. My approach now is when I detect a deer with ehd6 I euthanize it asap to interrupt the vector pathogen.

I have wondered about some signs of illness in deer for a while now.  I notice each year that I have a deer or two that will have sore / tender feet and hair standing on end.  This usually is accompanied by poor body posture as well.  However, my questions is: are these  signs of a illness in general or can we specify it to a certain illness (EHD)?  From my experience, these signs appear to show up in deer that are just plain not feeling well.  Maybe we could think of them as cold symptoms in humans.  There are many illnesses that could make our nose's runny, sore throat, ect.

Knock on wood, none of my deer that have showed these signs died, although I do generally administer some antibiotics when I notice them.  What are you thoughts on these signs?

the symptoms you describe are common in most illnesses.but when you see the symptoms its important pay attention to that animal. Look for scours, drooling, eye irritation, etc to understand better what the problem may be.

I can not thank you enough on the replies and other questions!

Scott, how do you tell to test to know which type of EHD that I have-had. My buck did not show any of the drool (Very Little), foamy around the mouth (Hardly 5 bubbles). When I saw a Tiny drop of blood in one nostril these when something told me that was the end.

Less than 8 hrs. Death.

I know. I did that too, I really want to know why that happens. It is hard for me to let got sometimes.

Due to the different strains is why you see different signs.

I think some strains are like a bee sting and they die from anaphylaxis when their lungs fill up with fluid.
