ive started vaccinating my buck fawns with ehd vac pellets this year , ive heared of deer having allergic reactions to the ehd vaccinations (becoming lethargic )has anyone had problems with this didn't want to have a problem and fawns not be strong enough to pull out of it

threw whitetails of Oklahoma ,pellet go's under the skin one dissolves immediately , the other in two weeks

What is this that you are using? I have never heard of it..any info would be appreciated

I haven't had any problems yet David.

The vaccine was developed in Oklahoma by WOO and OWDFA. It was free to all Oklahoma producers and is available from Newport Lab for purchase. The pelleted version was developed by Solidtech and is great.

The OWDFA had nothing to do with creating the vaccine in Oklahoma other than being residence of the State of Oklahoma. While at a USAHA metting in Buffalo NY 2 years ago I met a State of Oklahoma staff veternarian Dr Debbie Cunningham and she got the ball rolling.

That's funny Skip... I am a member of OWDFA and I release my samples to be used. I know of many others that did the same for the vaccine. I guess some people just want to suck up the credit folks!!! I for one, just want to help the producers protect their animals. Good luck to you Skip

More specifically, how does the pellet work? We currently do the shots, but it seems like the pellet only requires the treatment once. Do you inject it like the microchips? How effective is the pellet. Thanks.

Skip your attitude on this public forum is one reason why there will always be 2 organizations in Oklahoma.

Skip, why didn't you tell us that the other association had been present at the usaha meetings (where this idea had been born)? Did they also run case studies at their farms as well? (like woo did).If so, I would like to know what kind of resistance to the virus that their animals had. I used the pellets as well, just would like to have more info to see how valid the pellets are. Do we know how high the titer levels are? Is it stronger than the Missouri vaccine?

James,Had any of the things you mentioned would have happened I would have told you,but it did'not. As far as the vaccine there was little to no difference between the liquid and pellet efficacy. Some of the titer levels were in the 90's with 60 being acceptable and some were not,but most were.It may not be the silver bullet we were looking for,but at least we did something and did not just sit still and we do know more than we did a year ago.I seemed to have stirred up a hornets nest w/ my initial comment, but the credit goes to Dr Cunningham who made this happen. As far as being stronger than the Missouri vaccine I would say no,because studys show that a stronger vaccine has negligible effects on efficacy.Sometimes more is not always better.

WOO and OWDFA will be receiving the last 15 bottles each of vaccine. All members should contact the associations president for more info on get your need doses. Good luck to all with EHD season already hitting.

Thanks for the intel Skip, and thank you Mike for reminding us to pick up our vaccines from the ag. dept. The ag.dept sent everyone a reminder as well!

James, Dr. Roach called this week and wants Tim and Boyd to pick up the remaining 30 bottles(15 each association). OWDFA's will be picked up on Friday the 12th for those who need it still. Western and southern Oklahoma have been reporting it heavy again this year. Several of the dead were vaccinated with the new med. keep your fingers crossed it gets better.
