EHD should not be an issue here as we had a inch of snow last night and temps will be freezing at night for two more days.  I will rest easy for this year.

The old saying here is if you don't like the weather just wait a day and it will change.  I saw the temperature change from minus 30 to plus 70 one year in less than one hour.  It was awesome.

jack i am working on getting in the business and have had a good talk with you but this EHD is the most scary part of the whole deal to me. i will have alot of investment in breeding stock and do not want to lose them all. My pens will be fairly close to alot of low river ground and that is my big fear. if i maintain my foging program will i be ok or am i fighting a battle i may never win. being in northern south dakota i think has to be somewhat better

I had EHD all around me last year and 90% of the wild deer died. If I was on the river bottom I'm sure I also would have lost 90% of my deer. I have come up with my own ideas on why mule deer don't seem to get hit as hard or myself for the matter..  I believe it is because mule deer like higher dry ground thus not many midge flys.  Your right with the water and mud in the low river ground it will only be a matter of time before you will have a large loss of deer.  I don't see how you can fog an area like that and keep out the midge fly.  An area like that is setting you up for EHD and a large loss.

As far as my not losing many deer to EHD I attribute that to not having many midge fly because of the fact we are way above the river bottom on top of a bench.  So when I fogged we did kill the midge flys and because we are up high they didn't blow in as bad as they would in the river bottom.  If your serious I would buy land up high away from the river bottom.  Please do call me as I have other ideas about this industry learned from experience with our Fish and Game.
