ive heard that Bt is not contagious, That each had to be bitten by midge,i have hard time believing that after this week, i lost the one here few weeks back.then sold buck.looked healthy when left, saw guy today he said he died of BT few days later found in creek tongue blue and swollen. i also got one with mild case. holding her own for 3 days.long story short.if it virus i cant see it not being passed through slobers in water tank. and i will admit i was wrong I said i would not vaccanate.for ehd vet told me didnt do much good SO,well i changed my mind. but still not helping BT. healthy for 4 yrs now BT. i guess some wont say when they get it.i would like to learn all i can this stuff deadly!! anyway im gonna replace him.i think right thing to do.DC

DC,

Give a 2 cc shot of Banimine every 24-48 hours to the deer with the suspected Blue Tongue. This will help keep the fever and swelling down. Also, if they are having troubles eating, feed them soft foods like bananas, grapes, peaches, etc. You will have to cut pieces for them. If your deer are tame you may have to push it into their mouth for them. Their lips and tongue will be sore and tender. They can survive the BT but the EHD will kill. I kept one alive on Banimine and bananas for 3 days. He was always bedded in the same spot when I would return (not a good sign). After 3 days he finally made his way to the feeder. Oh and don't forget drinking water. Jeff

Thanks Jeff, I think the banamine and drax is helping her. i done been down this road, i watched her drink last night.she staying hid in weeds. she peeks through watching me. knowing she gonna get hit with dart again, i got bannas today for myself.i saw her eat some last night. Thanks Jeff. im seperating her anyway.just cause, Dc

Yep we thought bout that and decided leave her be. Thanks, im assuming this Virus does not spread. but dont see how not. Also there is ehd vacc, but no BT Correct? so would done no good. Dc

I agree with using banamine, but would also make sure a broad spectrum antibiotic, like tetradure, was getting into them, too. Also probiotics. My understanding is that the secondary infections like pneumonia are what kills them once their system is weakend by the BT or EHD. Good luck - it is nasty stuff to deal with.

Thanks Robbie,Im still wandering if it can be spread from slobbers on water,it gets there i cleaned and bleached, but every drink some get left. anybody know for sure,

DC the flies fly from animal to animal biting as they go this is how EHD is spread. I had two die this week from EHD, and as soon as found them I removed them and sprayed the pen down. I also ran all my deer through the chute and gave them another dose of EHD vac, Draxxin, and Banamine. This was recommended by Dr. Shipley. I also took one in to be tested to see if it was a new strain of EHD here in Southern Illinois that wasn't in the vac. Its been 5 days all the rest of the deer are still alive and well. The wind has switched to the SW for the first time since this all started so I am worrying today that it might start all over, but I've done all I can do.

Good luck with your herd.

Matt, sorry to hear that.Im seeing bluetongue.or ehd possible, i have never saw this. that part that suck 2 diffrent situations.and guess the midge is responsible for both.you can vaccanate for the ehd but my understanding nothing for Bt,and if your lucky you catch it,or hopefully you get mild case.mine still holding her own.no better no worse. i still dont like the BT slobbers in my water!!what symptons do you see with ehd? will the ehd vac help for the Bt? Dc

I am only 3 years into farming deer last two years 30+ cases of EHD, Bluetonge and I have tryed everything to stop it. this year i tryed something different since it was the secondary infections that kill them i started in april putting 1000 grams of CTC in my feed per ton and have kept it in there still to today it has worked for me this year i have had cases all around me but none in my pens that i have had to medicate. It have seamed to work for me and i know there will be people saying you can not keep Meds in the feed for that long but i have not had to drag one deer out of my pens or dart one since i started doing this. No spraying, fogging, just a additive in the feed to help treat what they died from (secondary infections)..

My system eliminates all insects and risk of EHD, many of my clients before installing my system did rely on this recipe. Nuflor, Ban. ,Draxxin, Bcomplex...

my system is comprised of high pressure misting nozzles placed around the perimeter of pens about every 15 ft , these are connected by nylon tubing that runs back to a motor/pump/reservoir that houses the insecticide and is controlled by a programmable timer to spray at desired times and length of time. I have testimonials on the website

Is it true that if a deer has ehd and survives they will be immune to the virus? If this is true, will the mother pass the immunities to offspring? Has anyone had the same deer get it twice?

Deer exposed to EHD will not certainly gain immunity to the same strain of the virus, much like humans develop immunity to chicken pox once exposed. So,using the theory that a human who had been exposed to chicken pox would produce offspring immune to chicken pox would be similar, we all know that is not the case. Some deer have a natural immunity (in their titer) that prevents them from contracting ehd. If we could figure out how to make a 100% transfer of the titer to the offspring, or isolate the immunity gene, then we could make some headway in a cure. At present, the best defense we have is the vaccine, but as been proven in the last few years, it is not a guaranteed prevention, as some innoculated deer have also contracted ehd (possibly another strain) . As an industry, we need to promote research like that being done at Texas A&M University to defeat this terrible disease.

Brett,

Many breeders bill their animals as bluetongue/ehd resistant due to their herds having been exposed before. I believe exposure does produce some immunity, but after the last 2 years seeing innoculated animals and "ehd resistant" animals fall prey to the disease, I am leaning towards natural immunity due to titer and genetics. Call me crazy, but I know those who have animals founded on a single bloodline which NEVER get ehd when animals within a 1/2 mile of them are dropping like flies. I have collected a few of these does over the years and as of now, these foundation does have produced offspring for me that have not gotten ehd.......yet.
