Hello,

New to the forum, any input is greatly appreciated!

Is there a better elk subspecies than another for raising elk?

Does one subspecies produce more/better velvet, better, more sought after meat?

Thanks!

I'm assuming you're talking about [Cervus elaphus canadensis / Cervus canadensis], not [Cervus elaphus]?

  • Roosevelt's [canadensis roosevelti] has largest body-mass.
  • Rocky Mountain [canadensis nelsoni] had largest antler-mass.
  • Manitoban [canadensis manitobensis] has larger body-mass than Rocky Mountain, but smaller antler-mass.
  • Tule [canadensis nannodes] is smallest out of all of them, usually ~half as big as the Roosevelt's.

Don't know which one(s) are more commonly farmed / are available for you to purchase, though.
