Has anyone on this forum ever exported a yearling doe to another country via airplane?

Can you recommend a qualified and highly-experienced shipping agent?

If anyone has hand any such experience, will you please advise?

thank you.

about ten years ago some people were shipping fawns in dog kennels by air from Toronto to western Canada seemed to work OK, they were only in the plane for 3 hours

I have moved several in to Mexico but never across the pond. All of the deer that I have put on airplanes were weaned fawns in dog crates. They just put them in the back seat so they could keep an eye on them.

I dont know if it is legal. If you have your own private jet, who is going to stop you. I have heard plenty of stories of people loading planes with deer and flying into Mexico from northern states. These are stories, so I dont know how much truth they hold. As with any rumor though, there is always a certain level of truth they hold.

G'day Lanasvet. Quarantine would be an issue.Check with the countries embassy. There have been several attempts to establish whitetail in Europe. The only successful transplant was in Finland in 1934 when O v borealis were released. There are now thousands & spreading to Sweden were they compete for resources with the indigenous roe deer. Cheers Sharkey

WTD were imported into the Former Yugoslavia in 1972 and again in 1974 or '75 from VA and PA. The Pres. Tito was an avid hunter and his desire was to create a diverse deer population that would attract hunters to the country. They imported in total about 30 North American White Tails and today there are herds of about 600-800 approximately. They are there, and there are other "successful" imports from the US and CA throughout the eastern European countries (i.e., Hungary).

It is legal, once cleared with the Department of Wildlife Resources (part of the Dept. of the Interior here in the US). My question does NOT relate to import legality or quarantine issues- I should've been more precise.

I am wondering whether a yearling Doe would survive such a journey and whether she will likely have to be sedated for a good part of it. In this case, keeping her in a recumbant (sp?) position would be difficult if she is in the cargo hold of a large plane.

Thanks guys, for your replies. Sharkey, please ask around your fellow farmers if they have had any experience with export via plane, and how they were able to maintain the health of the deer while in transit.

Hope today is a great day for all!

G'day Lanasvet. Didn't mention Tito's import into Czechoslovakia as the deer are claimed responsible for a parasitise infection which is transferred to domestic stock (undisclosed).I guess some there don't consider it as successful & would like to see them gone. The first import there was O v virginianus in 1840 they persisted in small numbers, but failed to thrive.I am still using red deer straws from his reserves collected in the eighties. He certainly had the best collection of red deer all the straws have providence some pedigree traceable for centuries.Several farms here have exported thousands of rusa to Malaysia & fallow to Taiwan,to set up their deer farms. This involved no drugs & deer were shipped in commercial jets 20 to a crate. If the deer are quiet & used to handling (conditioning should start at birth)mortality was not an issue.Whitetail are also considered responsible for a muscle parasite in NZ,so quarantine will be the biggest hurdle. Cheers Sharkey

Sorry Lanasvet, forgot to suggest to use one of the long acting neuroleptics (LAN's).Trilafon (perphenazine enanthate)should give you a transport window 5 to 14 days after administration.Cheers Sharkey

Sharkey, you are just a mass of information. Sorry to correct you though. Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia have absolutely nothing in common geographically, nor culturally.

Serbia has the largest WTD population because Tito's hunting grounds were located in that former-Yugoslav republic (now it's own country).

Our doe will not be hunted, god-willing, she will be a pet on a gorgeous location, if all of the legal stuff and health concerns are not a major hurdle.

Again Sharkey, thank you for all of this useful information- I am so impressed that you guys spend your valuable time responding to me. I am grateful.

We used to import cattle from Europe in the early 90's. We used Cargolux, we flew out of Luxemberg. Landed in New York. They use 747's, they will haul it if you make the crate for it. Shouldn't be a problem getting them hauled if you can get the import permits from the country receiving. We used to have to quarintine at both ends from 30 to 60 days. Gary

Tito received Czechoslovakia's highest award "The Order of The White Lion" twice. In 1967 he offered his friend ,the then leader protection & help against the Soviets, If needed.

Tito had been moving deer around Europe since the second world war.Apparently his best German Stags were "borrowed" from Herman Goring's place at Rominten at the end of hostilities.Every one else wanted real estate ,he took deer, gotta love that.

Tito was a real trophy man, however he was wise enough to keep phenotypes pure.We still have pure Yugo stags from the Drava river largley due to him(in my opinion).

Most comercial red deer breeders keep hybrids now & select for velvet sticks not to type.I think his deer legacy will be the thousands of pure straws from his red deer which are more & more sought after as people try to restore the sub-species. Cheers Sharkey

Wow, I had NO idea- this is not something that is widely known in the countries of the Former Yugoslavia. I am hearing it now for the first time.

Most importantly- I had no idea how serious you Australians were about genetics...

You rock! I will be going to the region this summer- let me know if I can be of any help (I speak the language fluently).

@Gary from GO WT's

Thank you so much for the useful information. I will look into quarantine times immediately.

Thanks Lanasvet.I'd love to know how the eastern European red deer (C.e pannoniensis )are fairing & how much genetic influence from western Europe (C.e hippelaphus) if any is in the wild herd? The Yugo reds are much larger than the Atlantics & are classed a Maraloid, intermediate ,between true red deer & wapiti.Be careful if you become attached to this species they are alot larger & more agressive than whitetails (350kg).Deer farmers like their size, but not their temperament.Hence the hybridisation.Currently Im breeding English & German red deer to type & will look seriously at the Yugo's soon.I have enough genitics in my tanks(all early eighties & some wild caught.Zagreb,Bosnia,Drava,Dr Brna,Kovar,to name a few boys)for several lifetimes. Some hinds Im picking up this Friday are sopposed to be Yugo ,be interesting to see how much if any.I'd love it if you could post some phenotype photos here if you have the opportunity.Stay Safe. Sharkey

In case anyone was wondering... In order to ship ONE 9-month old fawn to Europe from the Midwest US, it will cost about $2K, a special livestock cargo plane will likely be used b/c most commercial planes will not take a box (cage) higher than 35" tall. The deer is measured while standing, adding 2-3" to the top of her/his ears. Most times it's not a problem finding a large enough cargo hold in transoceanic flights, it's the smaller planes used for intra-European travel that limit your ability to place the crate/cage in a cargo hold area (they are mostly NOT high enough). I am still gathering info from freight forwarders who know livestock procedures. There is NO quarantine at the Chicago port, the Dept of Wildlife Services just shows up and clears the deer (or not) at the port of exit. I will look into their procedures in more detail today- but the people who work at the US DWS are really super nice, and to get a permit for the export it will usually take 30-60 days and about $200-300 in fees to DWS. As I learn more, I will post more.

Hope you all have a great, happy and productive day!
