I have our most important buck fawn now stumbling around with a bloated gut.

What can/should I do?

Please respond ASAP.

Thank you,

Mark

My thoughts are:

C/D anti-toxin, treatmentment amount on the label for goats is 10 cc sub-cu

B complex, or straight thiamine if you have it, depending on his weight, about 2 cc's

Penicillin OR tetracyclene - NOT both, they don't get along in the system. Whichever you have on hand. Good size does of either, maybe a little IM and a little SC. I know some even use penicillin orally, and claim to see good response with it. I have not tried that method - maybe someone else will comment on that.

Probiotics

Baking soda, table spoon or so, mix with water so you can drench with it (helps the pH get back on track)

Banamine, will help with the discomfort and fever if he has one.

If anyone else has something to change or add, please do. My ways aren't the only ways.

Good luck, Mark.

Your right on Robbie !!!! I have used penicillin orally and have had good success !!!! In the case here I`d use a heavy dose of Penicillin. Mark don`t rule out Ecoli or Salmonella but with the antibiotics you`ll have it covered. Just a guess.

Mark get a fecal sample tested at the vets and see what`s going on there. Hope things turn for the best for ya !!!

Mark is at the vet with the fawn. The vet wants to put a tube down the deers throat or use a needle to relieve the bloating.

Is this a good/safe idea?

Thanks for your quick replies.

yes, it's the symptoms that can kill it quickly ,relieve them and it gives you more time to fix /find the problem

I have heard McQuaig talking about inserting a 16 ga needle two fingers from the flank to relieve bloat, but I have never had to do it. Must work.

If we are dealing with Crostrial perfringens here the removel of the bloat will extend the time somewhat but it`s a must for the C&D anti-toxins and the large dose of Penicillin !! Hope this helps a bit !!!

the quickest way to get antibiotics into an animal is to use clear type(draxxin) and Inter venous inject, any thing with color or milky white is for sub Q or intra muscular

Vet says that the bloating isnt tight enough to try relieving it at this time.

The fawn is VERY lethargic.

C/D anti-toxin is not available to us at this time... is there anythig alse we can try?

Thanks again

I have given vegtable oil 50/50 with milk replacer to make sure they loosen up and can relieve in the normal pattern, only give an ounce

Boy Marsha I wish I had a way to get you some anti-toxin !!!! Do the large dose of pen and do some calling to find the anti-toxins. Maybe someone else has an idea of a substitute but I do not. Let`s pray that it`s not Perfringens.

Mitch,

What is considered a heavy does of penicillan? The vet gave the fawn 3cc and sent me home with 3cc for later (I dont have any at home). Should I give the fawn more now?

Thanks,

Mark

This is what I would do:

Give about 15 cc pepto to a small fawn mixed with 3cc Penicillin orally, and 3cc SQ of Penicillin, 7-10cc CD antitoxin, and Banamine 1cc/100lbs body weight IM.

Follow up with CD antitoxin the next day, more SQ Penicillin, and

restart the rumen with Calf Pac or probios the next day. You may need to give one more

dose of CD antitoxin on day two. Assess and treat as necessary.

If I felt the need to use oil for a frothy bloat, I would always use mineral oil instead of vegetable oil. Vegetable oil can increase bloat due to the digestion process.

The pepto helps because it is an anti-diahreal, anti-gas, and antacid product.

Give him what you have but I would make sure to get the CD Anti-toxin as soon as possible.

Mark, I know your in Ilinois from your profile. You could go to the U of I at urbana, go to the large animal clinic and ask for Dr. Shipley. I know they have C & D antitoxin on hand or drive down another 40 miles or so to our place and we can give you some. Rick
