Hey guys, I have a yearling buck that has had problems nicking and bumping his left side. He now has a swollen eye and redness around the base behind his antler and down toward his eye. Is this general soreness from injuring the antler and will subside? Or an infection? Or something else?

My guess would be infection...

My guess also.....do these usually heal over time? I gave pain med already and antibiotics to help.

In our experience you need to remove the antler and get some antibiotics in him asap.

If it looks like the above picture i would sedate and lance. Give a strong dose of meds and fluids. Act sooner rather than later. Ryan

What meds would you guys suggest and will the eye swelling go away on its own? Does it need poked to let out pressure???

Hey guys.....thanks for all the input......I decided to last night just give him 3cc of exceed as an antibiotic. His swelling in one day went from the size of a softball and looking TERRIBLE.....to less than a golf ball today....just thought I'd share because I'm sure some of you encounter this. And maybe instead of cutting antler you can use exceed like I did with some same success. Thanks all.

Just seeing how the final outcome came of the buck. I was down tonight and my one bucks right side of his face is a little swollen. Not near as bad as that but you can tell around his eye. Thanks in advance

I did dart the excede. Didn't do much for him. Darted him and have 9cc nuflor and 1.5 cc of banamine. Sweeping was about 95% gone the next day. He seems to be back to normal now

If exceed does not work. I use baytril. (My favorite and most result seen med). Yes I dart it. Both.
