Fawn coughing, looking weak

Hi guys, just need some advice. I have an 8.5 week old buck fawn who has had a poor appetite for the last couple of weeks. He looks groggy and disinterested in the bottle etc (lethargic). I've just noticed in the last 3 or 4 days that he is coughing a bit after he has a bottle. He also coughs sometimes while just walking around. I'm wondering if its pneumonia. My vet gave me sulvit powder to mix with water to treat for it, but he refuses to take it. I've syringed as much as I can down his throat, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Should I start him on penicillin? It's hard for me to get access to drugs, but I have penicillin on hand. His breathing also looks labored most of the time. He's just acting weird....no energy, only eating about half of what he should. Any ideas would be appreciated.

No. My vet will only give me what he decides I need. If I suggest or try to get a specific drug, he immediately says no...to show that he is the boss. I tell him that I am getting suggestions from guys with hundreds of combined years of experience and he says too bad basically. Thanks

Derek, Nuflor has worked great for me personally with fawns who are beginning to show the symptoms you have mentioned. Banamine may help him feel better as well. Hope all is well, Ryan

can you order online from the US, several places have 100ml bottles of Nuflor Gold for around $79.00.

I'm not sure, but I'd love to try! Does anyone know any places I might try to order the popular drugs for deer? Also list of common ones that I should have on hand? It's like pulling teeth here in ontario to get anything. I have him .5cc of penicilling at 9pm tonight....I guess I'll keep him on that and see if it helps.

I may try to find another vet if that is what he is doing. Remember that you hired him and those deer are yours. You are the boss. He just makes "educated" suggestions.

I agree with Jeremy and also agree with getting your hands on some Nuflor, my go to antibiotic in these situations. I would also try to get your hands on dexamethasone - it will help you twofold in this situation. It helps with the bronchial inflammation in his lungs and may increase his appetite. Best of luck to you.
