we had a fawn hit the fence and went right down we thought she was dead but alive she wasn't moving her legs but now moves her back ones but the front she doesn't move. shes eating fine and alert but wont put weight on front legs

thanks Ed

Is anything swollen? Does she have a concussion? pupils?

Have you given her a shot of BoSe or Banamin? Dex?

Hopefully it's only a pinched nerve. Keep up the Dex for the next couple days and you might try some thiamine too. Have you done a pinch test between the toes to make sure it still has feeling there?

Take radiographs of neck and spine. Diagnosis may not be good and you can choose a humane quicker treatment. Dex is great but make sure they get fluids daily as well!! If not better after 3 days of treatment, prognosis is very poor. Good luck and God bless!!

our 5yr old male that died had a exp about 2 yrs age like yours.

one of our rescue dogs(very lg boxer) jumped a series of fences and went after the deer. Timmy the male jumped the fence into the horse pasture and didnt quite make it, he landed on his head and broke his neck, he dislocated the vertibre. anyway it took us about 2 months to rehab him. various technics, alot of muscle relaxer and anti inflams. he could not stand for about 1 week and could not walk without falling down the rest of the 2 months until the spinal cord swelling went down, he did fully recover. my point is, in my exp deer are tough (unlike goats who will just lay down and die) if they look like they want to live, keep it up. it may take a while they will find a way to overcome it. good luck

the front legs are moving aolt more and she is moving around alot more. thanks for the input

Is she able to urinate and defacate on her own. If you pinch her toes hard, does she respond??

Try the skin underneath her hooves on the backside... Is it nice and warm? I haven't noticed any toes on my doe, maybe she is not done growing yet? hehe

sorry for my comment on "toes"- I speak Texan and i am used to people understanding our language :) We actually sometimes call antlers horns in general discussion.. deer have 2 toes with hooves covering them, if your deer does not respond to the pinch on the skin, dont give up yet... you can squeeze the toes or hooves:) with pliers to see if they experience "deep pain", if no response- very poor prognosis(spinal cord may be severed)..

Had a fawn last year very similar to this. Except she couldnt move front or back legs. She had a huge hump in the middle of her back where it was dislocated. (Dont know if she hit the fence or collided with another fawn, they get wound up playing and such). BUT conclusion: treated with dex and alot of TLC (massage and placement) and SLOWLY she recovered, a few times we thought we were going to have to put her down but this year will be her first breeding and she is a healthy as can be. They only thing is she still has that ugly hump in the middle of her back but she is fully mobile! P.S. did the toe pinch test and she only responded to deep pain (hard pinch). Good Luck!!
