Hi everyone we had our first fawn ever 2 days ago. My wife is at home with the deer while I am working out of state. The fawn weighed 11 pounds at birth and was a single buck fawn. Every time my wife goes to check on them even at 11:00 pm in the evening the mother is never laying with the fawn, they are always seperated. At times she will see them walking together or the mother cleaning the fawn, but does not catch them laying together. I was just wondering if this is normal behavior or should we consider pulling the fawn. The mother is 3 years old, and has raised fawns prior.

Thanks Everyone

That is what she is suppose to do!!

The fawns job for the first few days ...Is to hide while mom eats...

When the fawn can start to out run and out wit predators the fawn will hang with mom more...

and also The mom doesn't want to lead predators to the fawn by being with it all the time.

Joe,

Painted is right........sounds like you got a good mother there.......no worries she is doing exactly what she is supposed to do. The Mom has a lot more scent then the fawn does and therefore like Painted said, she does not want to lead predators to the fawn so she naturally will lay away from the fawn....as long as she is cleaning the fawn and taking care of it as you stated she is you have nothing to worry about.....enjoy the fawn!! congrats on the new addition!!

Thanks so much for your input everyone. This website is fantastic for beginners like myself. You folks are very much appreciated for your knowledge and help. That more than anything has me hooked on this business. The Deer aren't bad either !!!
