Can bottle fed fawns get lumpy jaw? What should i give them and how much? 2 fawns have it. The same ones that the mice nibbled their ear. I don't think it's related. Didn't know if fawns got something else that would cause bumps on them

Fusobacterium isn't prejudiced and will infect your bottle Feds the same as mother raised if exposed. One treatment for 5-7 lb fawn would be 0.30 cc of Nuflor 3x over ten day period then give Red Ridge vaccine.

Draxxin will do the job as well along with several other fusobacterium susceptible drugs. Generally we don't start out with something that strong on our fawns.

Bell is right on with the Nuflor advise. It takes care of it in most cases fairly quick.

we gave 1/4cc draxxin..after i looked at her tonight it is DEFINATELY  her ear that is infected..NOT lumpy jaw

Is it the ear tag hole infection progressing inward or does it appear to begin at the chewed area? My guess is the infection is likely still the result of fusobacterium. If you lose one get a sample taken from the infected spot and send it to Newport Labs. I had a few get sore ears last spring and I thought the rain and mud caused some of the irritation then infection in mine. I also had a couple infected navels last spring. I haven't had a problem ever before with infection there. I had treated them with iodine shortly after birth. About 1 in ten of my fawns every year get lumpy jaw. I am trying the Red Ridge vaccine this year and hopefully I won't see it anymore at all.

Long Lasting Penicillin will work as well and is ALOT easier on them and will save you CASH as well!

Penicillin works great for Fuso if given directly into the area. Last about 10 days I think it is. That said, GREAT care must be taken to avoid the eye area. It grosses me out just thinking what could happen otherwise.

Solid advice Roger!.....................But when dealing with deer Penicillin and Baytril should be a Farmers front line of choice when treating especially Fawns................Very Forgiving.......Inexpensive......Very Effective for MOST problems..........Readily Available.........Easy on the Animal and Hard to OVER DOSE! ;)

Best of Luck with Everyone's Fawns  :)

Bell..YES....it was from the hole and worked it's way down..and it went FAST...we cut her tag off and treated and gave shot of drax...with all that said ...is penicillan better for this than drax? I had both in my hand and chose the drax. It's my dang rold gold/ flees boomer louie fawns

I am not sure about using the penicillin with the Draxxin. I'll leave that answer to some one with more knowledge or the DVM's to explain. It won't hurt her to start her on the Nuflor shots recommended while the Draxxin is still in her system. Don't overdose her. Give the Nuflor in the muscle. You did the right thing removing the tag as soon as you noticed swelling. You may be able to use the penicillin now. I don't know but I'm sure someone will post the answer.

Think I killed a buck fawn last year with anaphylactic reaction to the penicillin. For me it won't happen again. I give nuflor gold and la300 together. Works great for me especially if u catch it early.

Jerrilee, I killed a fawn several years ago with LA200 from anaphylactic shock. I now keep a bottle of Epi handy when giving ANY antibiotics, it has a fresh needle taped to the bottle so I don't have to look for one.

Any animal can have a reaction to any drug, but penicillin is more likely.

Any Animal or Person ..............Runs the POSSIBILITY of a REACTION.....................To ANY DRUG!!

So why pump them full of drugs when something happens to them? I have had 5 deer with lump jaw and all of them never got drugs and the lump went away by themselves... People wonder why some drugs are not effective any more hmmm maybe they're over used the bacteria has built an immunity to it....
