we had our fence come lose between some of our fawns and some of our bucks 8 bucks 2 and 3 yr old and 15 fawns should i seperate asap or would they be alright for 2 weeks when we plan on moving them anyway. we have some fawn bucks inwith them i hope the big boys wont kill them at this time of yr.

thanks Ed

I have my buck fawns in with my two and three years old right now. I believe the hormone level of the bucks is way down and the fact that their velvet antler is growing in will allow them to live together. But I have them in a sixty acre pen so they have plenty of room. In a few weeks the wild ones will all be in buck groups with no problems.

For the last few years as soon as all our bucks loose their antlers we put them all together. We have never had any problems with doing this. The buck fawns do alot of playing and the older bucks just watch them. It really seems to work well and you get to see them all grow together. We keep all the does and doe fawns together but in smaller groups.

Since the bucks are not in hard antler now, the risk is less that they will injure one of the fawns. However, they will go through the "pecking order" gestures and a fawn trapped in a corner could be kicked pretty hard.

Ed, I had yearling bucks beside some 2 and 3 year-old bucks last year with just one fence to separate them. My plan was to move them before the velvet came off around the end of August, but something happened and one of my 2 year-olds got his antlers hung in the fence and I wound up making jerky out of him. If I were you, I wouldn't leave them that close for any longer than necessary. Good luck.
