I've had deer for a few years now but am just starting to really get into it.  I don't think I've been maximizing my deer cause of the feed I give them.

I use the follow from my local tractorsupply store

roasted soybean

Medicated calf starter (not much)

black oil sunflower seeds

sportsmens brand deer food (20% protein)

Sportsmens golden nugget

Corn

any suggestions on a better formula.  do you change your mixer throughout the year?

JBlessel,

Where do you live? I know around me the feed mills are able to make whatever I would like and I am guessing it is going to be cheaper for you to do it that way compared to buying 50lbs bags of things and doing it yourself? maybe not though

Also how many deer are you feeding? it may not be worth switching?

do you have any idea what your macro's/nutrient levels are in %?  ..%fat ..%protien ..%fiber stuff like that?

I am relatively new to deer farming myself but I am sure there are some people that can give you some useful advice

Sounds like you are already using Record Rack formulas but they make a breeder formula that is a complete textured feed.  It's called the deer and elk breeder formula and it's in the red bag.  I used it with good success but just switched over to Purina's textured feed.  Maybe tractor supply could order it.  If not, a local feed mill should be able to get it easily.  I think you would be farther ahead buying a bag of complete feed rather than mixing all that yourself.  It's less work, but more importantly, you know the exact breakup of all the nutrients and all your vitamins and minerals are already in there in the proper quantities.

During drought periods bump up the protein, cut the fiber and mineral back.
