Ok...I've read all the posts here and nobody has got it right yet! Everybody listen up, cause this is what a ''hunt'' is suppose to be like:
You move along very very slowly and cautiously, almost creep so to speak...and when you see your quarry, you first look carefully behind you...then stop.
First thing you do after you stop is put your cigarette down, then very carefully put your beer down where it won't spill, then quickly yet methodically roll the window down...take aim and FIRE!
Ok, seriously, there is an absolute menagerie of different ways to hunt, and I believe that as long as they are within the confines of the law, they should carry a certain measure of regard and respect from everybody.
Can I remind us here that for the vast vast majority, hunting is suppose to be fun. It's a way of enjoying the outdoors and being entertained in the outdoors. If someone is skilled enough to shoot an animal with a rifle from 500 yards away and have fun doing it, good for them. If someone else has the skill to overcome the ''heebie jeebies'' of a close encounter with an animal and shoot it at 20 yards with a longbow, good for them...OR of any legal hunting method somewhere in between these 2, good for them.
If either one of these hunters are hunting over bait where it's legal, be it from the ground, a tree, ground blind, a tower or a pit, good for them. And now that I'm on the subject of bait...is there really much difference between hunting over a pile of corn, than a 1/4 acre food plot, than a 50 acre bean/corn field, than a place in the woods where the acorns are falling, than over a water hole, etc???
Brett brought out a good point with his reference to a ''stick or a stone'' as a weapon. We could even 'back' this up a bit and say unless we run our animals down and catch them with our bare hands it couldn't be considered hunting.
Dennis also brought out a good point with his reference to ''hunting for survival''. I will tell you one thing for sure and for certain, if I'm killing game for survival, whether I'm hunting over bait using sticks, stones, bare hands, bow, gun, or DYNAMITE...you can believe that whoever I'm feeding will call me a ''hunter''!!!
Definition of hunt, hunter, and hunting according to Webster's:
hunt - ''to go out to kill or catch game for food or sport''
hunter - ''a person who hunts''
hunting - ''the act of a person or animal who hunts''
Provided that the method of hunting is legal, I think we need to be careful using the label ''that's not hunting''.
dearjohn - I respect your opinion although I don't agree with it in it's exactness. I do admire though your strong conviction in what you believe...it's people that are ''wishy-washy'' that are a real struggle for me.
''Good hunting'', or a ''good hunter'' in my opinion, regardless of the hunting method/weapon, is when he/she ONLY and ALWAYS takes good ethical shots...shots that ensure a quick and clean kill of the animal...those that respect the animal enough to always put them first and to NEVER do otherwise, no matter how big or how small!
''Good Hunting'' everybody!!!
