i was just wondering if anybody on here from minnesota could tell me where i can get some wood posts for fencing, just starting out and think there has to be a cheaper place then home depot or menards. awhile back i thought someone said there was a place in milaca that had some good posts for pretty cheap. just wondering the name of that place. also was wondering as to what size your using. 10 or 12 foot posts, i have been told either will be fine but to me 8 feet up and only 2 feet down just doesnt seem to be enough? i might also be looking for some fawns in september. waiting to hear back from a local farm on a deal but not sure if that is still going or not, would be looking for 2 doe fawns and one buck fawn. if anybody will be selling send me an email or private message with some info and pics, thanks chris

When I started 3 years ago, I was too cheap to buy poles so I went out in our pasture and cut oak posts. It was alot of work but it didn't cost me anything... just potential firewood. My oak posts will last longer than me! You would want to use 12 footers for sure.

I would check into using some steel 10' T-posts, every other one is what I did. they were about 2/3 the cost of a 6"x12' treated post about a year ago but probably a lot cheaper now that steel has dropped in price . I have seen some farms go 2 steel posts for every wood post and it seemed to be just fine. It's also less work if you have access to a skidsteer or loader. you can just push them into the ground provided its not to rocky. Tom Wavrin with Mid West fence sells them . He is located south of the cities (near Owatanna i think). I don't have a # handy but it is on the web.

good luck

I have used replaced telephone poles that I got from two different power companies. When they replace a pole because of an ice storm, wind, car wreck then they either leave it on the right of way or take it off of the property and back to the work yard . These poles are not good enough to pass the standards for power line use but all of my pens are made from them. They'll outlast me too. They are usually given away to some farmer building fence. It would be worth asking your local power or utility company if they had any or knew of any. Good luck ! Jeff

:)we used hedge corners here in Mo. then steel t post every 10' but am going to build couple more pens and am going to use 3" steel pipe pounded in with angle pipe 9' out then weld 2" down to it know some guy's use this and have one strech 900' long with no wood and it works great for them ! good luck it's alot of work but well worth the reward W/S "JUST LIVIN THE DREAM "
