Hello all,

I would like to start off by saying my husband and I are new to deer farming. We have one buck and one doe. This year was our first fawning year. We have one doe fawn. She is 3 days old, and I'm not sure what vaccines I should give her. I have ready several different approaches and was hoping to get some feedback. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you!!!

Prairie meadows, this is my first year as well and there is a plethora of information as to what vaccinnes to administer on this forum. A simple search will give you more options than you can actually administer without leaving your fawn no more than a pin cushion. I have concluded that most on this website have a history of which vaccines make sense for there situation and the history of problems they have experienced in the past. Therefore, I ended up contacting a local deer breeder I have confidence in and used the same vaccines he has used over the past years. I am in Mexico so we have many of the same issues and some different.

I followed my local deer breeders recommendations:

Give probiotics (Probios paste) Oral 1cc

0.1cc ivomec oral

When they are two weeks old

.25cc Covexin 10 Subq

.25cc Fusobacterium Subq

We are feeding goat milk as we have a herd here on the ranch and they LOVE IT and have had no problems so far.

FYI - My research on this forum came up with a concensus of the following vaccines:

3cc C&D Antitoxin given subcu.

2cc Alpha 7 given subcu.

3ccBovine Ecolizer+c given orally

3cc Probiotic paste(orally of course)

.1cc Ivomec Plus given subcu.

.1cc Draxxin given subcu

Best of luck - this is an absolutely great forum for info.

Thank you Arthur. I appreciate the feedback. It can be so overwhelming with all the different methods. As for the goat milk, next year we will be milking our own and giving to the fawns. I'm glad to hear it works good for you. Thanks again.

Remember, you are not in a "production situation" with many deer, so you can go easy on all of the vaccinations and de-wormers this year...

LA ROSA

3cc C&D Antitoxin given subcu.

2cc Alpha 7 given subcu.

This sounds a little much to me, we give our fawns 1/2cc of Alpha 7 and 1/2cc of C&D. And I must add that we have never had any disease issues. You have to remember your avg. fawn only weighs 4-5lbs. When your pumping 2-3cc's of meds into a newly born animal just be careful you don't overdose it! Just my experiance. Never heard of giving that much to a fawn.

My opinion is everyones farm is different. If you have a 5 deer your going to be less likely to need an extensive vaccination program to start than if you would have 50 head. Also location plays a big part. I would talk to someone that has deer close to you if you can and see what they use. I talk to guys all around the US and vary few have the same protocal when it comes to what to give a fawn at birth. If you do find a regment that fits you and need help finding supplies check out our website or give me a call I would be glad to help you out. Here is our regment on our farm in Ohio.

1/2 cc BOSE (sub Q)

2cc Bova-serum (sub Q)

2cc Bovine Ecolizer +C20 (oral)

3cc of Head Gear Fawn Arrival Paste (oral)
