Yesterday I finished up the handling facility (poor mans version). And i tried to run the deer through got three of my six through. Two does ran back through as i was closing the gate to the alley way. and the my buck fawn got freaked out in the alley so i let him out. My 3 yr old buck went right through easy as pie no a bit nervous just walked. Didnt drop the floor on him in the chute bc i have to do TB and B testing shortly so didnt want to stress him. but opened the end door and he stepped down and just walked out. Then i had a 2 yr. old doe go through same way (lil more nervous getting out of the chute). Then last we put a doe fawn through and dropped the floor the whole nine yards. WORKED GREAT! Best part is I built everything myself. That just addeds to it all. Have to work on pushing into the first box though. All in all not to bad. Ill post some pics later.

Congrats on your construction.

Is your buck (2 year old) at all tame? I just wonder if the tameness of the deer affects how they respond to being corraled. Your response and others jump in too. I'm wondering if there might be a benefit in having a level of tameness with the bucks as well. This year will hopefully be first year to have birthed fawns and would like to know what level of tameness to shoot for for the buck fawns.

We find that the tamer deer are harder to work. It is hard to get them to go down the chute since they won't run away from you.

If you are using a system for the first time, if possible, let your deer up in the corral with some of the system doors open so they can explore it as they feel comfortable. Then when you are ready to move them through, they will go a lot easier if they are familiar with the territory. That is why the more you use your system the better the deer go through.

I do believe it is an advantage to have them some what tame. all but one of mine are 10 footers. She is the wildest but still 20 foot. she spooked and then took my tamest with her. when they ran back past me. My tamest eats from my hand. The buck was real calm in the alley and in the chute. With the chute door open he actually stood there for a couple seconds. Im new at this but i would rather push them then have them bashin the fence.

Let's see some pics :) Congrats. I'm just now putting the finishing touches on mine as well. Can't wait to do my first test run, too. Hope it goes as smooth as yours.

Jared you are right on.......I would rather have to push the deer through the system than having them nervous and smaking the fence every chance they get....the less stress the best!!

I just uploaded some pictures of the chute onto an album under my profile. Take a look and let me know what you think. Keep in mind I am on a very low budget so I am trying to do my best with what I have. I needed to have this done so I could keep up with my TB and Bruculous testing. I am acredited right now but it is expiring in sept. So I must get tested again. I bought from a real good herd that had a 2001 CWD date so I am 8 years certified plus TB and Bruculous acredited. So I have put myself in a position that my deer can go absolutly anywhere. I plan on adding to my herd with better genetics once I start to sell some. Have fun looking and try not to laugh too hard. lol:D

I took a look and If it was mine I would be proud of it.

You did great job on it

as you use you may change things

but it looks like you though it out

good luck with testing

Rick

Jared,

Thanks for showing me and the rest of us a practical use of the Album capability of these forums. I wasn't sure how they would work! :)

Jared, Took a look at your handling facility and I think your on the right track. I know what your talking about building it all yourself as I have just finished my own. It's all homemade also on a budget. I will try to get some pics in my album soon. Rick

We too are in the process of building our facility....it's great to be able to see your pictures. I will certainly post pictures of ours when we get ours done.

We hope to put together a video of running deer through our handling facility the end of the summer. Whenever we have it put together we will let folks know. We have a breeding herd of about 600 deer and have been in the business about 14 years, so have run a lot of deer in that timeframe. We have tweaked our system numerous times but feel we have something that works very well. Our drop chute is a little worse for wear but still works fine. So should be interesting to see what we can put together in a video.

Yes I did build the chute. I used the plans that are on deerads.com the ones for the drop chute for under $600. No the only thing the directions are a little confusing. After having the one end down the other end flys together.

Jared, looks great, I will be starting on mine next weekend. Your pics. have helped me alot. Thanks for posting them and good luck. Allen

I have some pics in my album of our facility. Most of it was brain stormed by my dad and I. All was built from scratch exept the chute inself(delclayna). We have worked around 300 head with NO crashes--knock on wood. There are more on my website.

Jared, that looks really good. And I love how you took all those pics and posted them. This new site is absolutely the bomb!

Jane and Gary, can't wait to see your video later this year.

I suspect we will get many people sharing videos this year on many topics and that is great.

Again a great looking system you have there Jared.

nice job. dosen't look bad at all. Good to hear there where no major problems with the test run. Good luck with it in the future.
