Im all fawned out and the fawns are 2 weeks old. My ? is i have all my does in the own pins and im thinking of opening up my gates and letting them run together and start them Hanging together. Plus the does might like getting away from there babys for a bit. Is this a good idea or a bad one.The does all got along before but i dont want anyone getting hurt. Thanks for the infor on here. Jim

Probably not the best idea....I personally would not do it.

The does will then go through a pecking order....beating on each other and running each other around. I wouldn't take the chance of a doe getting hurt and not being able to nurse their fawns.

Would be hard to start bottle feeding a 2 week old fawn if the worst happened.

Hi Jim,

I have all my does in one acre pens which will enter my run way. Put about five does per one acre pen. The deer run way will enter a forty acre pen with great food plots. When the fawns are up and running I will open the one acre pens up one at a time. The does and fawn will leave the small pens in a day or two. I then close the small pen off after I walk it to be sure the fawns are out. I then do the next pen same way. I'm sure the larger pen makes for less stress on the does as they reestablish the pecking order but I have not lost any fawns from doing this. The better food quality is what I'm after for the health of the herd and growth of the fawns.

Thanks Jack and Susan, for your comebacks my one doe is always been the boss and im sure that will be the case,

Hi Jack, hows life in Montana and are you keeping up with the Fawning and Calfing? I hope mother nature is being Kind to you. Jim

Jim,

I got a very late AI time in last year on deer as I was helping one of the sons build his home. I left the CIDR's in 25 days. I hope this is not a big problem for me. It looks like I will be about 80% on the deer this year. My expected start due date is June 16 so I have no fawns yet. I got ten straws of a great elk Six Pack 504 SCI from a friend and we got 9 calves from that out of ten cows. Had I fawned when I would normally I would have been in big trouble as the weather was rain and snow for almost a week. Fawns would have been in big trouble. Weather is fine now with lots of sun. Good for fawning and calving.
