Have a four year old buck that has had the runs for 6 weeks, has lost around 30-40 lbs and treating him with NO improvement, he is not getting worse but not getting better either. We had his stool sent to penn state and they informed us that he has salmonella??? Anyone ever had this problem or disease? Anyways we need to get this buck back to health before he totally fades away for good. he is eating and not too lathargic, but he has water coming out the back end and losing too much weight. thinking about darting him but want to know what we could IV him with to get him started on the right track. The below meds are not working: First treated him with 10 cc per day of corid ,for ( 5) days. Then went to 8 tablets (4 ) mg of dexamethasone per day for ( 7 ) days. At the same time he was given ( 4 ) tablets of Metronidazole 500 mg. Then went to Trimethoprim/ sulfadiazine ( 6) tablets per day 800 mg, plus (4) tablets per day of ciprofloxacin 750 mg. for seven days. still no better. At present am treating with ( 8 ) tablets of ciprofloxacin 750 mg per day . Along with these meds in the past three days I have given him 120 cc of Platinum Bio-Sponge. These meds were all authorized by a combination of veterinarians. Please Advise, Thanks in advance!

I would get him on good probiotic as soon as possible. Remember, when you treat with any kind of med that fights bacterial infections, your killing the good bacteria with the bad. That can have as many negative affects as the infections themselves. The probiotic will replenish the micro-flora in his stomach and intestines and hopefully help with the scours. Hope this helps and hope you get him turned around.

Your vet is advising the same drugs you would use to treat a dog with similar issues- and you are a dedicated and good owner b/c you are clearly shelling out big bucks for these meds. I would contact a deer vet like [email protected] (Texas) and ask for his opinion. I know that Salmonella (thrives in standing water- frogs spread it too) is difficult to eradicate in humans as well. Personally, I would go with systemic drugs (injections- IM) b/c a deer's rumen is not like a dog's stomach, but again, I am NOT a medical professional. So consult a vet who knows how to handle a rumen. hurry, I wish you the best of luck.

Obviously I would try to keep him as hydrated as possible. Maybe try to give him some watermelons if you can get your hands on any.

I guess my direct question would be what drugs could you run through a ringer or IM to him when he would be down that would give his immune system a good boost because the oral route just is not cutting it!

My experience with salmonella diarrhea cases mainly involve quick deaths. I would contact the lab that cultured the sample and ask them to do a "sensitivity for non-food producing animal". This will test the bacteria against a list of antibiotics and you can choose the best. If you can find albon iv solution(sulfadimethoxide) it works great but very difficult to find these days. L S 50 is Lincomycin/spectinomycin and can be applied to water. Culture/ sensitivity is very critical though. Amen to the probioitcs. Anti-diarrheal's may cause a train wreck. Slowing the gut down allows the bacteria to grow even more quickly. the bodies defense is to get it out quickly. We have had deer respond to baytril as well but it has to be documented and never added to the human food chain- depending on your state regs. Pen Deer are currently classified as non-food animals in Texas. I also love naxcel iv. If you can hospitalize, you can treat him twice a day with naxcel at 2 cc per 100 lbs iv.. DO NOT USE BANAMINE!!! Fresh spinach leaves and grapes are good for the gut as well, no carbohydrates(no sweet feed or textured pellets at this time). While in chute, you can feed 2 crushed sucralfate tabs to help heel irritated intestines at once a day treatment. I would really check the lab first though. Takes maybe a day for sensitivity. Keep us in touch !!!
