Can you use garlic powder from the grocery store in the spice section that you use on food ? Can you put this on the deer food to keep the flies away ? Is it the same as at the mills ? Thanks

Quoted from another thread:

Apple Creek Whitetails feed pellets are made by ADM who purchases whole garlic cloves like you buy at the store. This is than crushed and added to pellet . The garlic powder is too strong smell and taste for whitetail. Leo from ADM phone # 218-820-0658 if you need service he will link you with rep in your state.

Yep gar;ic is garlic......you just need to make sure you do it right as far as the mixture is concerned....make it to srtong the deer won't eat the feed.

Dennis, I have been wanting to try this. I have just a few questions. I have four deer in each pen 1 buck and 3 doe. I keep a feeder full of 16% Purina pellets. I also feed alfalfa about every 3 to 5 days. Each evening I feed 1 scoop say a coffee can full of what i call sweet feed or textured feed. I add a few peanuts and pacans to this. How much garlic powder would add to this coffee can of feed mixture each evening?

I wish i had an answer for you SPlit Creek.......I have not used the garlic yet myself but do know several people who have and they swear by it....i will be doing it on my next shipment of feed.....all the people i know have it mixed in when they ahve their feed made and they mix it by the ton....so I am not sure if anyone has an idea on how much you would put in per coffee can? I wish I was more help.........virgil do you have any idea how much he would want to mix? i know you have mixed it in your feed before.......

I use the granulated garlic from Sam's club also. I have used it the last 2 years and it works great. I use 5 lbs./ton.

I use 7lb. per ton. The deer may turn their noses the first day , but they eat it the second day. The results are good.

Toadman,

Being in the food business most of my life, I truly understand the importance and value of mixing especially with micro ingredients. ADM has chosen to use crushed garlic which is distributed with a micro-ingredient mixer to ensure that a small amount of garlic is distributed in the pellets. The small trace of garlic is not detected by the deer but is very effective in preventing flies. We all know the potency and smell difference between powdered garlic and crushed garlic. Just hand mixing garlic in feed can cause inconsistent mixing vs. a pre-manufactured pellet which is mixed at 5-6 pounds per ton. Apple Creek has great respect for garlic in feed because of the incredible defense against flies vs. using chemical fly control.

I purchased the garlic powder from Walyworld to try. After scratching my idy bity brain trying to figure out ER's .25oz I looked at the small bottle's total oz and divided by .25 and what equaled that many scoops. A tablespoon equaled that amount.

I use the 1 tablespoon per 5 lbs of feed. I feed for 2 weeks still had some flies. I stopped for a week and the flies are ridiculous. We are back to using the garlic. The only thing is that I am going to bump up the 1 tablespoon for 5lbs to 1 1/2 tablespoons for 5 lbs of feed. Going to make it stink a little more.

We mix our feed by hand for now since we only have 4 deer, and a couple hundred pounds last for a couple weeks.

I am a firm believer in the garlic now and will not stop.

Thanks to everyone who has given us newbies some valuable information.

I feed the ADM in my mix 365 days a year with garlic. The largest difference is that the last two summers since I started doing this the deer have a few flies on them, but they aren't running around like they used to the last 2 weeks of June and the whole month of July. I also have those bees that show up every April naturally that eat fly larvae from deer droppings. I haven't used Ivermectin except sometimes in October to keep those bees coming back every spring. The less stress the better all the deer look.

I just wanted to say that I started adding garlic to my feed with excellent results. Thanks to everyone for your guidance. My deer thank you as well!
